MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team had three individual award winners headline its season-ending recognition from the Big Ten Conference on Friday, as
Rose Lavelle was named Midfielder of the Year,
Victoria Pickett earned Freshman of the Year honors and
Paula Wilkins was recognized as Coach of the Year.
The only unanimous All-Big Ten first team selection, Lavelle finished the regular season with 17 points, including seven goals and three assists. The junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, has earned first team All-Big Ten selection in three consecutive seasons and is the first player in program history to be named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year. This comes after she became the first Big Ten Freshman of the Year in program history in 2013.
Pickett started 15 matches in her debut campaign, scoring two goals to go along with four assists. The midfielder from Barrie, Ontario, earned Freshman of the Week honors on Oct. 13. She becomes the second Badger to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year after Lavelle in 2013.
Pickett was also a second-team All-Big Ten selection and was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
At the helm of the program, Wilkins led the Badgers to an 11-5-3 record, including a mark of 8-2-1 in Big Ten play. Wisconsin captured a share of the Big Ten regular season title, its first since 1994. This marks Wilkins' first Big Ten Coach of the Year award at Wisconsin and her sixth overall.Â
Wilkins becomes the second Big Ten Coach of the Year in Wisconsin history, joining Dean Duerst in 1996. Now in her ninth season with the Badgers, Wilkins is just two wins shy of 100 at Wisconsin with a 98-59-24 record in Madison.
In addition to its three individual honorees, Wisconsin saw senior defender
Brianna Stelzer and sophomore goalkeeper
Caitlyn Clem each named to the All-Big Ten second team. This is the second straight year Stelzer has earned All-Big Ten second team accolades.
The Big Ten also recognized 14 Sportsmanship Award honorees, which included Wisconsin junior defender
Holly Heckendorf. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. They also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the competition setting.
Wisconsin is the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament and earned the right to host its quarterfinal match against No. 7 seed Ohio State on Sunday at noon (CT) at the McClimon Complex in Madison. The semifinals and championship match will be held at the site of the highest remaining seed on Nov. 6 and Nov. 8, respectively.
