
Ferrell, Badgers earn best finishes of the year at Cardinal Cup

Junior tied for first and equaled Wisconsin record for 54 holes

Louisville, Ky. - Brooke Ferrell headlined a fourth-place performance for the Wisconsin women's golf team at the Cardinal Cup, as the junior tied the best 54-hole score in school history.
Ferrellwas 4-under and alone in the first through two rounds on Monday. In Round 3, Tuesday, Ferrell shot a 1-over 73, which put her at a 3-under 66-74-73=213 for the tournament. The scorecard tied two other marks-set by Ferrell in 2014 and four others-for the best three-round output in UW history.
Ferrell tied for first with Jacqueline Chulya (72-71-70=213) of Columbia, which noted a new best tournament finish. The result was also the first time a Badger won an event since Kimberly Dinh took the crown at the BYU Entrada Classic in 2013.
Wisconsin (302-295-299=896) moved up one spot, Tuesday, to place fourth-a new season-best finish for the Badgers. The team shot an 11-over 299 in the third round, putting it at 32-over for the competition.
No. 20 Louisville ( 14, 287-297-294=878) ran away with the tournament, topping second-place No. 47 Florida State ( 25, 296-289-304) by 11 strokes. Chattanooga (303-298-294=895) rounded out the top three after jumping seven spots on the final day of the Cardinal Cup. The Mocs were just one shot better than Wisconsin at 31-over.
In all, UW finished ahead of three top-50 teams (No. 31 Notre Dame, seventh; No. 23 East Carolina, eighth; No. 42 Illinois, ninth).
Michelle Cheung (78-72-78=228) and Nat Zeng (78-73-77=228) were Wisconsin's second-best performers, as the duo placed tied for 29th at 12-over. The freshman Zeng picked up a new career-low for 18 (73), 36 (151) and 54 (228) holes.
Becky Klongland tied for 34th, one stroke behind Cheung and Zeng at a 13-over 81-77-71=229. Her third-round 1-under 71 was the best score of the day and second-best-behind Ferrell's 66-for the tournament for the Badgers. Klongland also earned new 18- and 54-hole career-bests.
Gabby Curtis (80-76-81=237) completed the team scoring, shooting 21-over and finishing knotted in 65th.
Competing in the first 54-hole competition of her career, Tess Hackworthy ( 15, 80-75-76=231) placed tied for 44th and second among individual competitors. Her 36-hole score of 155 and second-round 75 beat out her previous season lows, which came during the stroke play rounds of the Badger Invitational.
Wisconsin returns to the links, Oct. 25-26, at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
