MADISON, Wis. -- In a loaded 36-team meet featuring 20 of the top-25 teams across the country, the Wisconsin women's cross country team took 25th at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational at the Zimmer Championship Course on Friday. Â
Â
The Badgers tallied a total of 580 points, just missing 24th by a point to Arizona State (579).
Â
For the fourth-straight meet, redshirt freshman Shaelyn Sorensen led UW with a 37th-place finish, running the 6-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 23 seconds. Following behind her was Jamie Shannon, who placed 71st in 20:42.8 and Michele Lee, who crossed the finish line in 20:58.1 fora 99th place finish.
Â
Also finishing for the Badgers were Colette Richter and Erin Wagner who placed 186th and 187th as they crossed together in 21:47.0.
Â
"We've got to figure out what's wrong and fix it," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "Times like this, they challenge you as a coach and they challenge you as a student-athlete, and that's the great thing about our sport. You try to figure it out and you try to fix it and put the race behind you and move forward. We've got the conference meet coming up in two weeks and if we dwell on this too much, then it could be a tough day out there."
Â
No. 1 New Mexico ran way with the team title garnering 32 points as the Lobos placed all five of their scorers in the top 10. No. 11 Arkansas was second with 188 points thanks to a third-place showing by Dominique Scott. Â Rounding out the rest of the top five was No. 17 Virginia (215), No. 12 NC State (238), and No. 3 Providence (262).
Â
The top individual finisher of the race was Boise State freshman Allie Ostrander who broke the course record in 19:19.5.
Â
The Badgers were missing four of their five scorers from last year's fourth-place team at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational, including NCAA runner-up Sarah Disanza and Molly Hanson, a two-time second-team All-American on the track.
Â
"Obviously we got some bad news this week with Molly Hanson being out," Byrne said. "Molly's done for the season and we made a decision right then and there to pull Sarah Disanza and not run her. Also, Amy Davis the freshman, it just made sense not to run them. When you don't have some of your stars like that, you're going to take a big hit, and we certainly took a big hit. Shaelyn Sorensen ran well and we had a few others shine today, but we're just not deep enough."
Â
The Badgers next see action at the Big Ten Championship in Chicago on Nov. 1.
