The Director raised the question of policy in making future schedules with non-Conference opponents. He explained to the Board the publicity arising from the return basketball game with Rice which was played at Madison in 1957 based on a contract signed in 1955. There was no problem attendant to the game as far as personnel was concerned but the squad members were not housed together in Houston.
The student member stated that after the Daily Cardinal article the subject was discussed in a meeting of the Student Senate. This committee speaking for the students stated that there should be no discrimination on trips.
The Chairman discussed the question and informed the Board that he has received letters and telephone calls from members of the Faculty... The committee was quite concerned and felt that the Athletic Board should consider the matter. The Chairman of the Human Rights Committee advised that the question was raised in a meeting of his group and that he had requested that no action be taken by his committee until the Athletic Board has considered the matter. The Chairman read a proposed resolution for consideration:
It is hereby declared to be the policy of the athletic board and of the intercollegiate athletic department that wherever a Wisconsin team plays another institution in any athletic events, the members of the team are to be permitted to travel together, lodge and dine together, and play together as a team without discrimination as to any members comprising the team, resulting from a policy of the institution or from local or state laws, customs or practices.
This declaration of policy shall be included in all contracts, executed hereafter, to play other institutions and shall be a condition upon which the contract is entered into. Inability to comply with this anti-discrimination policy after a contract to play has been signed shall result in cancellation of the game of contest.
