Endowed scholarships are valuable gifts to UW

Badger fans, alumni, donors and ticket holders often ask how they can personally make a difference and directly impact the educational experience of UW student-athletes. While there are a number of ways to support Badger student-athletes, one of the most meaningful is to endow an athletic scholarship.

Providing scholarships to student-athletes is among the Athletic Departments greatest needs as annual scholarship costs are now over $8 million. Endowing a student-athlete scholarship is an extremely thoughtful and generous way to help the UW athletic department provide a well rounded student-athlete experience both in the classroom and on the fields of play. It also provides the donor with a unique opportunity to get to know a UW student-athlete on a more personal level and leave a lasting impression on the University and Athletic Department.

This year, a record number of loyal University of Wisconsin supporters recognized the Departments need and in turn, made a generous contribution to endow an athletic scholarship in their honor. Ten new or increased funds were established in 2008, bringing the departments overall total to nearly 150 endowed athletic funds.

"I chose to establish an endowed scholarship as it offered me a way to give back to the University and Athletic Department that provided me many opportunities and memories," stated Buddy Cohen, UW graduate and football letter winner.

Jeff and Kim Beckmann echoed the same feeling as they commented, Although neither of us are UW graduates, we are life-long Wisconsin residents and Badger enthusiasts. We have reached a point in our lives that we feel we can `pay back UW Badger athletics for the fun and excitement they have provided us over the years. We hope that the Beckmann Family endowment will help to maintain the Universitys traditional level of excellence, as well as provide the absolute best experience for the student-athlete, both within their sports and in their academic progress.

Although 2008 was a record year for the number of endowments established, annual efforts to secure new endowed funds continues as the UW Athletic Department annually provides over 300 scholarships to 800 student-athletes in 23 sports. The athletic department one day hopes to fully endow all scholarships available to Badger student-athletes, and will continue to work diligently to that end.

The athletic department is greatly appreciative of the generous support from these 10 individuals and families, stated Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez. Based on their generosity, they have made a drastic impact on the overall future of UW Athletics. I cant thank them, and the others that have established endowed funds, enough.
