MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsored a Holiday Blood Drive for the American Red Cross on Nov. 9 at Union South on the UW-Madison campus.
The drive resulted in 90 registered donors and a total of 78 units of blood collected. These units helped to save the lives of over 234 patients in need.
“It was great to see how many people came out to donate around this time of year,” said SAAC president and Senior Soccer Player Lauren Cochlin. “We know that students and faculty have tons of stuff going on during this time in the semester, but the overwhelming support for the cause was awesome.”
SAAC also succeeded its goal for the drive of 75 units of blood collected. “It meant a lot for our committee to be involved in such a blood drive so close to the holidays, and exceeding our goal was just icing on the cake,” said Cochlin.
In 2011, Red Cross Blood Services has distributed more than nine million blood products for patients in nearly 3,000 hospitals across the United States, according to the organization’s website.
SAAC is a leadership group made up of representatives from each of the 23 UW athletic teams that provides an outlet for student-athletes to deal with the rigors of student-athlete life. The group serves as a liaison between the student-athlete population and the coaches, administration, Big Ten conference, and other related parties.
