MADISON, Wis. - The 14th Annual Forever Badgers Endowment Donor Appreciation Luncheon held Oct. 11 at the Kohl Center, allows donors to Wisconsin Athletics, Badger student-athletes and coaches an opportunity to meet. This unique event also provides the department the opportunity to recognize and thank the many individuals who have made generous contributions to establish endowed funds.

Attendees heard remarks from Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin Athletics donor Joe Rothbauer and a student-athlete panel, which included Mohammed Ahmed (Track and Cross Country), Chris Borland (Football) and Michelle Mueller (Softball).

Alvarez thanked those donors and student-athletes in attendance and commented on the recent success Wisconsin student-athletes have achieved. Alvarez said, "I am extremely proud that last year we had five programs claim conference championships, 16 teams advance to post-season play and seven teams rank among the top-25 nationally in attendance."

He continued, "However, I am even more satisfied that last year we had 194 Academic All-Big Ten Honorees, 112 student-athletes graduate and that our student-athletes volunteered more than 4,000 hours in the community. This success is consistent with the proud commitment to academic excellence and service that extends to all areas of campus."

Rothbauer called attention to his inspiration for establishing an endowed scholarship fund. Rothbauer said, "Wisconsin provided me with so much. It was time for me to give back and support current Badger student-athletes."

Ahmed, Borland and Mueller each thanked donors for their support and provided insight into their individual experiences as Badger student-athletes.

Currently, over 160 endowments have been established for scholarship and operational support. These funds provide the department with nearly $1 million in spendable income. The Wisconsin Athletic Department extends a grateful appreciation to these individuals and families for their impactful investment in the long-term academic and athletic excellence of Badger student-athletes.

Each year the Wisconsin Athletic Department faces the challenge of funding the scholarships of nearly 800 student-athletes in 23 varsity sports. Over 15,000 donors annually contribute to help meet those needs, which include over $10.5 million in scholarship expenses.
