MADISON, Wis. - The 13th annual Wisconsin Athletic Department Endowment Donor Appreciation Luncheon took place at the Kohl Center on Friday, Oct. 5. Wisconsin Athletics donors and Badger student-athletes were present at this unique event which provides the opportunity to recognize and thank the many individuals who have made generous contributions to establish endowed funds.

Attendees heard remarks from Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez, UW Foundation President Michael Knetter, endowment donor Jennifer Jardine-Rortvedt, and rowing student-athlete Kendall Schmidt.

Alvarez described the importance of endowments while also thanking donors in attendance saying, "Endowed scholarships are very important because they secure the future of our athletic program."

Kendall Schmidt thanked donors for providing scholarship support. "Your generous donations make it possible for Wisconsin to consistently produce talented student-athletes year after year." Kendall continued, "Your gifts allow each athlete to give 100% of themselves to the school and their sport. Making them outstanding team members, serious academic students, and great representatives of Wisconsin. Thank you for allowing student-athletes from all backgrounds to earn a degree from such a prestigious school."

Currently, over 160 endowments have been established for scholarship and operational support, and provide the department with nearly $1 million in spendable income per year to help fund important areas of scholarship and operational expenses. The UW Athletic Department extends a grateful appreciation to these individuals and families for their impactful investment in the long-term academic and athletic excellence of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics.

Each year the UW Athletic Department faces the challenge of funding the scholarships of nearly 800 student-athletes in 23 varsity sports. Over 15,000 donors annually contribute to help meet those needs which include over $10.5 million in scholarship expenses.

The success of Wisconsin Athletics and Badger student-athletes depends in great part on the collective loyalty and generosity of alumni, fans and friends.
