MADISON, Wis. -- Mike Lucas, a longtime Madison media personality and radio color commentator for Wisconsin football and men’s basketball games, has been hired by Learfield Sports to provide exclusive content for UWBadgers.com starting on Oct. 1.
Lucas will be responsible for producing content for the official website of Badger athletics on a daily basis, including event previews, post-game coverage, personality profiles, video segments and more.
“First of all, I will forever be grateful to the Capital Times for opening the door and keeping it open while I learned and honed my craft and diversified into other mediums,” Lucas said. “I've been covering the Badgers professionally for two-thirds of my life and this looms as the most exciting chapter for me personally because of the uniqueness of the position. I believe that I bring a special historical perspective and passion to my work that will only be accented by the unlimited access that I will now have to the coaches and athletes who shape the events. I look forward to sharing these stories with our readers and viewers.”
A Beloit, Wis., native, Lucas wrote for the Madison Capital Times for 39 years and brings unmatched experience to UWBadgers.com. As a student at Wisconsin he also wrote for the Badger Herald and Daily Cardinal. All told, he has been covering Badger athletics since 1969. Along with national, regional and local writing awards, Lucas has twice been named Sportswriter of the Year in Wisconsin.
Lucas is in his 16th season as the radio color commentator alongside play-by-play man Matt Lepay for Badger football and men’s basketball and has also served as the color commentator on both radio and television broadcasts for Badger men’s hockey. In addition, he hosts a daily morning radio talk show with Lepay on WTSO in Madison and a weekly television show, “Sidelines,” on UPN-14 and WISC-3 in Madison which is also seen in other markets around the state.
“Mike’s tremendous writing style and story-telling ability, combined with his unparalleled experience, make him a terrific fit for our website,” UW Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations Justin Doherty said. “We are excited to be able to showcase his talents and think it will enhance the coverage on our site for our fans.”
Lucas has authored five books about Badger athletics: “Barry's Badgers: The Road to the Roses,” “Five Golden Rings: The Saga of Wisconsin Hockey,” “The 25 Greatest Moments in Camp Randall History,” “Don't Flinch: The Barry Alvarez autobiography,” and “Another Hill to Climb: The Bo Ryan autobiography.”
