Sept. 6, 2010

MADISON, Wis. -- Every day this week leading up to the induction ceremony, one of the seven members of the University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2010 will be celebrated. The Hall of Fame induction is Friday, Sept. 10 outside the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center. The 6 p.m. ceremony is open to the public. Today's celebrant is former Wisconsin football player Don Davey.

Davey was a four-year letterwinner for the Badgers, becoming the team’s captain and winning team MVP honors in 1990. That same season, Davey was named first-team All-Big Ten at defensive tackle as he tied a then-school record with 24 tackles for loss. Following his senior season Davey was selected to play in both the Senior Bowl and the Japan Bowl.

A native of Manitowoc, Wis., Davey might have been even more successful off the field than he was on it. He became the only four-time Academic All-American in NCAA history.  In order to be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average for his career. In addition, Davey was a four-time Athletic Board Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten selection and was named to the Academic All-America All-Time second team in 1998 by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

After his college career ended Davey was selected in the third round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He played for the Packers for three seasons before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995. He closed out his nine-year NFL career in 1998.
