MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
This week: This Week: The No. 1-ranked Badgers open their 2012 season at home by hosting the Badger Opener at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course at University Ridge. The 8-kilometer men’s race begins at 5:30 p.m., following the women’s race. The Badgers will race against Central Michigan and Edgewood College.
Last week: Last Week: The Badgers head into 2012 as the defending NCAA champion after claiming the program’s fifth national title in 2011. UW also is the 13-time defending Big Ten champion and seeks a 10th-consecutive NCAA Great Lakes Regional title when the Badgers host the regional meet in November.
Need to know: Wisconsin returns three of its top-five finishers from the 2011 national championship team in All-Americans Mohammed Ahmed and Reed Connor and senior captain Maverick Darling.

This week: The No. 29 Wisconsin women open their season at home by hosting the Badger Opener at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course at University Ridge. The 5-kilometer women’s race begins at 5 p.m., with a men’s race to follow. The Badgers will race against Central Michigan and Edgewood College.
Last week: Wisconsin enters the 2012 season coming off a season that saw the Badgers finish fourth at the Big Ten championship, fourth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and 24th at the 2011 NCAA Championship.
Need to know: With 2011 Big Ten runner-up Caitlin Comfort exhausting her eligibility, the Badgers will be led by returning All-Great Lakes Region selections Ashley Beutler and Gabrielle Anzalone. Anzalone was the 2011 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

FOOTBALL (1-0)
This week: No. 12 Wisconsin (1-0) hits the road to take on Oregon State in a 3 p.m. (CT) matchup in Corvallis, Ore.
Last week: The Badgers opened the season Saturday with a 26-21 win over Northern Iowa at Camp Randall Stadium behind a pair of touchdown passes from QB Danny O’Brien to WR Jared Abbrederis and a rushing score by RB Montee Ball.
Need to know: UW has won 11 consecutive regular-season non-conference road games dating back to a 2001 loss at Oregon. The Badgers have won 33 straight regular-season non-conference matchups overall.

WOMEN’S GOLF
This week: The Badger women's golf team opens the season by returning to the Cougar Classic hosted by the University of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.
Need to know: The 24-team tournament is held Sept. 9-11 at the 6,219-yard Yeamans Hall Club.
Good to know: The Badgers return four regulars to the 2012-13 team, including senior Lindsay Danielson who led the team in scoring last year with 75.90 strokes per game.
MEN’S SOCCER (1-1-1)
This week: The men’s soccer team (1-1-1) returns to Madison after two weeks on the road to open its home schedule with Florida International on Friday at 7 p.m. The Badgers then host No. 16 Georgetown on Sunday at noon.
Last week: The Badgers posted a 0-1-1 record at the Nike Portland Invitational, dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 25 Washington on Aug. 31, and settling for a 1-1 draw against Portland on Sept. 1.
Need to know: Freshman goalkeeper Chase Rau has recorded the decision in all of the three games so far this season, starting against Washington and Portland, and coming in at halftime against Memphis.

This Week: The No. 14 Badgers (4-1-0) continue their nonconference tilt by welcoming Illinois State to the McClimon Complex on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday’s duel will conclude Wisconsin’s nonconference home slate.
Last Week: UW finished its West Coast swing, 1-1, dropping its Friday, Aug. 31, match to top-ranked UCLA, 2-0, before outlasting Loyola-Marymount, 4-2, on Sunday, Sept. 2.
Need to Know: The Badgers have tallied a combined 14 points through five matches for the first time since 2004.

VOLLEYBALL (5-1)
This Week: The Badgers (5-1) open their home season on Friday and Saturday, hosting the 21st annual InnTowner Invitational. Wisconsin will take on Drake (0-6), North Dakota State (1-5) and Milwaukee (4-3) in the round-robin tournament.
Last Week: An official tournament champion was not crowned but the Badgers would have won the Long Beach State Invitational last weekend with a perfect 3-0 mark. Wisconsin swept James Madison before downing Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State by 3-1 scores.
Need to Know: Wisconsin currently leads the Big Ten in blocks per set with 3.19. Seniors Alexis Mitchell and Mary Ording are tied for third with 1.33 blocks per set. Junior Annemarie Hickey leads the Big Ten with 5.43 digs per set.
