Hall of Fame Class of 2011: Scott Lamphear

Aug. 27, 2011

UW Athletics Hall of Fame

Every day this week leading up to the induction ceremony, one of the seven members of the University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2011 will be celebrated.

The Hall of Fame induction is Friday, Sept. 2 outside the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center. The 6 p.m. ceremony is open to the public. Today's celebrant is former Wisconsin men’s soccer athlete Scott Lamphear.

Five consecutive shutouts resulted in the ultimate prize for UW defender Scott Lamphear and his teammates in 1995 as the Badgers won their first NCAA men’s soccer national title. With Lamphear’s tough defense and strong leadership, UW became the first team since 1976 to go through the entire NCAA tournament without giving up a goal.

Lamphear, team MVP and co-captain in 1995, started every game in his four-year career at UW. He was named a first-team NSCAA All-American in 1995, capping off a spectacular senior season. The three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection was also named to Soccer American’s MVP list in 1995, named Wisconsin’s Male Athlete of the Year (1995-96) and earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor (1995-96).

During his four years at Wisconsin, Lamphear and his teammates accumulated a 61-19-7 record that included 42 team shutouts.

The All-American’s accolades didn’t stop on the field, as Lampear was named first-team GTE Academic All-American in 1995 and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors three consecutive seasons.

Clinching the title in 1995 was the icing on the cake for the Badgers. Wisconsin had earned berths to the NCAA tournament in 1993 and 1994, but fallen short. Following their title in 1995, the Badgers were named the College Sports Magazine Team of the Year.

The defender participated in two US Olympic festivals (North-1993, 1994) and was an Umbro Select College All-Star Classic Participant in 1996.

The No. 11 pick in the 1996 Major League Soccer College Draft, Lamphear served as team co-captain for the USISL D3 Rockford Raptors in 1997 and was a member of the 1998 USISL D3 national champion Chicago Stingers.

Lamphear graduated from Wisconsin in 1996 with a degree in chemical engineering.
