Hall of Fame Class of 2011: Lou Holland

Aug. 27, 2011

UW Athletics Hall of Fame

Every day this week leading up to the induction ceremony, one of the seven members of the University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2011 will be celebrated.

The Hall of Fame induction is Friday, Sept. 2 outside the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center. The 6 p.m. ceremony is open to the public. Today's celebrant is former Wisconsin football and track and field athlete Lou Holland.

A three-year letterwinner on the gridiron, Lou Holland led the Big Ten Conference in scoring in both the 1962 -- when he was named first-team All-Big Ten -- and 1963 seasons. The halfback rushed for 934 yards and 22 touchdowns, while also catching nine TD passes and throwing for three more, during his UW career.

Among Holland’s most memorable accomplishments was the four touchdowns -- then the Badgers’ school record -- he scored in a game against Illinois.

He also had a three-touchdown performance in a 37-6 win over No. 1-ranked Northwestern on Nov. 10, 1962 -- a game that propelled the Badgers to the Big Ten title -- and went on to score on a 13-yard run in Wisconsin’s 42-37 loss to USC in the Rose Bowl.

Holland competed for two seasons in track and was part of the 1962 UW squad that claimed the Big Ten team title indoors and finished runner-up outdoors. Individually, he finished third in the 60-yard dash in front of the home crowd at the 1963 Big Ten Indoor Championships in Madison.

Following his collegiate career, Holland played for the Chicago Bears as well as the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League. He won the 1964 Grey Cup title as a member of the Lions, a team that was inducted into the British Columbia Hall of Fame in 1986.

A 1965 graduate of UW with a degree in agricultural economics, Holland went on to a 40-year career as an investment management executive and entrepreneur, founding Hahn Holland and Grossman in 1983 and Holland Capital Management in 1991.

He also remained connected to alma mater, serving on the UW Foundation’s board of directors from 1990 to 2006, as well as on advisory boards for the UW Athletic Department, UW College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and UW School of Business.

In 1990, Holland was honored with the Wisconsin Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award.
