MADISON, Wis. -- Did you know UW-Madison and the Wisconsin State Fair share a long history? In fact, the very first State Fair of the Wisconsin Agricultural Society was held in 1858 on Camp Randall grounds.
Although the fair has moved to West Allis, and Badger football team is the primary occupant of Camp Randall, we still have ties to the fair. On Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011 UW-Madison is hosting a Day at the Wisconsin State Fair.
Make a date to visit the fair and celebrate UW-Madison's top rankings, including the great contributions the university has made to agriculture and food in the state.
While visiting the Central Mall, be sure to check out our impressive display of Wisconsin-grown fruits and vegetables. The gridiron Badgers are highly-ranked, but did you know our state is number one in snap bean and cranberry production?
Whether processing or production, pickles or potatoes, each day UW-Madison scientists are working closely with farms to improve these critical crops that contribute to Wisconsin's $60 billion agricultural industry. Explore our special food and agriculture tent and learn about all the ways UW-Madison expertise is helping make Wisconsin agriculture strong.
You don't need to read the rankings to know that Wisconsin is tops in cheese production. See how it is made when the master cheesemaker in the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences holds a cheese-making demonstration on Central Mall. You can even sample Babcock ice cream and cheese--while supplies last.
Don't forget about the other UW-Madison attractions at Central Park including a Pep Rally with Bucky and the UW-Band at 1:00PM and the chance to check out recent athletic championship trophies.
Don't forget that as a part of UW-Madison Day at the Wisconsin State Fair, we're also holding a school supply drive to benefit Milwaukee Public School students. Donate select school supplies (links to: http://www.statefair.wisc.edu/school-supplies.html) at the fair on August 10 and you'll receive a voucher for $5 off a Midway "Ride All-Day" wristband.
Mark your calendar, stock up on school supplies, work up a good appetite and we'll see you at UW-Madison Day (links to http://www.statefair.wisc.edu/) at the Wisconsin State Fair, Wednesday, Aug. 10.
