Big Ten Announces 2013-14 Distinguished Scholars

MADISON, Wis. -- Forty-six University of Wisconsin student-athletes were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for 2013-14, the Big Ten Conference office announced Wednesday.

The conference released that 684 student-athletes, who earned a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the academic year, were selected in 37 different sports. Distinguished Scholar recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution.

Wisconsin had 17 sports represented in the Distinguished Honors List, including women's basketball (2); men's cross country (1); women's cross country (6); football (4); women's golf (4); men's hockey (1); women's hockey (2); men's rowing (4); women's lightweight rowing (1); women's rowing (2); men's soccer (3); women's soccer (1); softball (3); men's track (2); women's track (7); volleyball  (2); and wrestling (2).

Three-time honorees were Natalie Berg, women's hockey; Kimberly Dinh, women's golf; Crystal Graff, volleyball; and Scott Liegel, wrestling. Two-time honorees were Charlie Clapp, men's rowing; Will Ottow, men's track and field; Paige Resch, lightweight rowing; Emmon Rogers, women's track and field; Maria Van Abel, softball; Abbie Weigel, women's track and field; and Taylor Zimprich, women's cross country.

Six honorees, representing five different sports, had a 4.0 cumulative GPA for the 2013-14 year, comprising of Beau Batty, men's rowing; Liga Blyholder, women's cross country; Jackson Hein, wrestling; Berg; Clapp; and Dinh.
