Vintage poster art perfect gift for Father's Day

Are the men on your shopping list hard to buy for UW Athletics just might have the perfect gift for them.

When the department began the vintage poster and cards project that showcases beautiful illustrations used in past football game program covers, it was an opportunity to commemorate through collectible art the legacy of Camp Randall Stadium.

But something interesting has evolved from the project. Most of the orders are being placed by men.

It seems men think the football cover illustrations are 'manly art'," according to Tam Flarup, the Director of Web Site Services who spearheaded the project. Eighty percent of the orders are from men. It seems men cannot find note cards they can identify with very easily. Everything is flowers or butterflies. These cards, which depict games from the 1920's, 30s and 40s, fit their taste."

Another interesting fact is many orders are being placed by Marquette graduates, particularly by lawyers for their law offices. One of the covers is from the Marquette vs. Wisconsin game held on Oct. 2, 1937. Series two features the Wisconsin vs. Marquette game from Oct. 6, 1934.

"The covers are just beautiful, Flarup said, "but more to the point, Marquette does not have football any more and these past MU graduates want to have something that commemorates that past. UW and Marquette used to meet on the gridiron annually. According to the Marquette Alumni Association, many of their graduates still lament the fact that Marquette no longer sponsors football, so this is a modern day way of having a keepsake of a by-gone era.

The 16x20-inch posters are available as a single order for $18, or fans may buy any combination of four for $60. The set of 12 5x7-inch note cards and envelopes sells for $15. It contains three cards each of the four poster illustrations.

The 2006 series includes the Pat ODea homecoming souvenir program from 1934; UW vs. Marquette, Oct. 2, 1937; UW vs. Michigan, Oct. 19, 1935; and UW vs. Minnesota, the 50th anniversary of that meeting, Nov. 23, 1940.

The 2007 series has the 1934 Marquette game, the Iowa game from Oct. 12, 1940; the Purdue Homecoming game from Oct. 28, 1933, and the oldest cover in the series, the Oct. 6, 1928 game with Notre Dame.

The vintage poster project spanned two years and covers are no longer being printed. If you havent obtained this great art by now, supplies are limited. Celebrate the great history of Wisconsin football and Camp Randall Stadium with these vintage posters today.
