MADISON, Wis. -- A total of 82 Wisconsin student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the spring and at large sports to close out the 2010-11 academic year, announced the Big Ten on Monday.
Women’s hockey goaltender Becca Ruegsegger led the way for UW on the spring list with a 4.0 grade-point average. The Lakewood, Colo., native also received the NCAA’s Elite 88 Award this year while being honored as a WCHA Scholar Athlete and named to the All-WCHA Academic team.
In addition to Ruegsegger, seven other members of the women’s hockey team also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.
Men’s tennis standout Marek Michalicka garnered academic all-conference honors after making a third-straight appearance in the NCAA singles championship. Michalicka was also named first-team All-Big Ten and was a Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Senior outfielder Jennifer Krueger and rowers Vanessa Kleiss and Rachel Buchholtz joined the academic group. Krueger was named second-team all-region and named third-team All-Big Ten for a third-consecutive year. Kleiss and Buchholtz were both named to all-central region teams by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA).
A total of 1,078 spring and at-large sports student-athletes were named Academic All-Big Ten. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
