University of Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez announced Thursday that UW Athletics will no longer print media / recruiting guides effective immediately. The move is being made to help with cost containment as well as to take advantage of the variety of emerging electronic and online communications methods available.
Athletic departments across the country are looking for ways to operate more efficiently from a financial standpoint, Alvarez said. Our communications, marketing and Web site services staffs have embraced new media and continue to be innovative with Web site content. We feel the time has come to fully move our printed content, including the media guides and annual report, to UWBadgers.com.
The UW Athletic Communications Office has been printing media guides for more than 60 years. In recent years, the publications have become useful for coaches in their recruiting efforts. Now, all of the information contained in those guides biographies, statistics, records, facilities information, recruiting information will be available exclusively at UWBadgers.com, the official Web site of UW Athletics.
This is a move we have been discussing for quite a while now and its being discussed within both the Big Ten and NCAA, Alvarez said. We believe there are a number of different approaches we can take with our online content and our staff will continue to work to determine what works best for our student-athletes, coaches, fans and media.
This move is expected to result in savings of close to $200,000.
