MADISON, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin will name the ice sheet at La Bahn Arena the "Lance Johnson Memorial Rink" in recognition of a major gift to UW Athletics from Peter O. Johnson and his son, Erik S. Johnson, and their families.
Lance Johnson was Peter's son and Erik's brother. Lance was an avid and accomplished Madison area youth hockey player before dying in a car accident as a teenager in 1987.
"We are pleased and grateful that Peter and Erik chose to support Wisconsin Athletics as a way to remember and honor Lance," UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez said. "This facility will have a profound and positive impact on our student-athletes, coaches and fans for decades to come."
"Lance was a tremendous hockey player who lived life to its fullest," said Erik Johnson. "His time with us was cut short, but he would be overjoyed knowing that he was able to impact hockey for the better at the University of Wisconsin and all youth hockey in the greater Madison community."
Construction of La Bahn Arena started in March 2011, and is scheduled to be completed in October 2012. Highlights of the facility include men's and women's hockey and swimming locker rooms and team meeting rooms, women's hockey coaches' office suite, athletic training room and seating for 2,200 spectators.
Peter Johnson (UW-Madison BBA '61) founded Madison-based Hy Cite Corporation in 1959. The company has become one of the leaders and innovators in direct sales, internationally distributing the popular Royal Prestige brand of cookware and related products.
Peter is a longtime donor and ambassador of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, serving in a number of capacities over the years. Peter's first gift to the University was more than 30 years ago. Since then he has financially supported a number of areas, including the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, School of Business, School of Education and College of Engineering.
Peter is a member of the University of Wisconsin Foundation's Bascom Hill Society and the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics' Camp Randall Society. He is also an active member of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. Peter and his wife, Ellen, have also been generous to the Madison community, making the lead gift to construct the Ellen & Peter Johnson Agrace HospiceCare Residence which opened in 2006.
Erik (UW-Madison EMBA '97) currently serves as Chairman and CEO of Hy Cite Corporation. He has continued the legacy of philanthropy established by his father and supports a number of causes in the Madison area including the United Way and Edgewood High School. Also members of the University of Wisconsin Bascom Hill Society and the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics' Camp Randall Society, Erik and his wife, Amy, have contributed generously to the UW Athletics annual fund and a number of athletic facility campaigns over the past decade.
