MADISON, Wis. -- Seven student-athletes volunteered at the Wisconsin Dance Marathon March 2 to raise money for the American Family Children's Hospital.
Football players Ricky Wagner, James White, Rob Havenstein, Derek Straus and Shelton Johnson and UW women's crew members Nicola Kim and Elizabeth Schoenfeldt all danced alongside participants as part of "Athlete Hour."
"It's just great to show our support for the Children's Hospital and to help those less fortunate," Johnson said. "Whenever you can give back, it's a great opportunity."
The event raised more than $64,000 during the 15-hour marathon that also included appearances from UW student performance groups, recreational activities and free food. It was held at the Memorial Union on the UW campus.
"[Having the student-athletes participate] really encourages everyone here that the student-athletes really care and give back to the community," said Wisconsin Dance Marathon committee member Lauren Weinstein. "It's a great support system."
The American Family Children's Hospital is part of UW Health system and is located on the University of Wisconsin campus. Opened in 2007, the state-of-the-art facility provides a comprehensive pediatric medial and surgical center for children.
