MADISON, WIS.-- Fourteen student-athletes acted as "celebrity servers" at the United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) Banquet and Auction on Saturday, Feb. 23.
Representatives from football, men's and women's rowing, and women's soccer served food to over 200 guests and played games with the attendees to secure donations for the UCP. Other "celebrity servers" included UW alumnus and track Olympian Cindy Bremser and Wisconsin native and Olympic speed skating gold medalist Casey Fitzrandolph.
"My favorite part of the evening was taking pictures with people there and talking with them, getting to know them," said 2011 Heisman trophy finalist Montee Ball.
Ball also did push-ups with UW Women's Soccer players Leigh Williams and Joana Bielefeld during the event to raise money.
"Doing the push-ups was exhausting, but the money was donated to the UCP so I am really happy I [did them]," said Ball. "I volunteered tonight with UCP because it's for a good cause. It's good for the heart. It's really something that I enjoy doing."
The event raised over $75,000 for United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Dane County.
"UW student-athletes have been absolutely essential to the UCP Celebrity Banquet," said Trisha Davies, Development Director for the UCP. "We've been lucky enough to count on their participation year after year and it is one of the biggest draws for our event. We are very grateful for their participation."
United Cerebral Palsy of Great Dane County provides services to individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities across their life span.
"The student-athletes help us accomplish being able to provide service to families and individuals with disabilities in every city and village in Dane County," said UCP Executive Director Camilla Rucinski. "That's what tonight's funds will be geared towards."
Student-athletes participating included football players Montee Ball and Shelton Johnson; crew members Michael Ou, Dan Agostinacchio, Tim Aghai, Chris Gall, Anne Rauschert, Elizabeth Schoenfeldt, Nicola Kim, and Emily Norco; soccer players Lindsey Hamman, Lauren Gunderson, Leigh Williams and Joana Bielefeld.
