An important part of the UW rowing tradition has been the quality of our coaches over the years. Norm Sonju, Randy Jablonic and Sue Ela, who guided the crews through much of the modern era, were instrumental in keeping the program perennially near the top of the field. As inheritors of the legacy, we're committed to upholding that tradition, and believe the renovated Crew House will provide the most critically important enhancement that we need to succeed.
My experience in the University of Wisconsin's rowing program and its intense work ethic provided the foundation for my success as an international rower and is the reason I chose coaching as a career. Over the years, I've heard people speak of moments that changed their lives. Mine changed as a young student in the fall of '72 when I first tried out for the UW crew.

When we were in high school in southern Wisconsin, neither of us was blessed with the kind of athletic skills that usually are considered necessary to compete succeessfully in some of the more popular sports. At the UW, however, rowing provided us with an opportunity to not only compete, but to strive and excel as varsity athletes. As co-chairs of this fund-raising effort, we are both extremely proud to work on behalf of sustaining - and enhancing - such a worthwhile tradition for other Badgers rowers who follow.

Looking back on my years as an oarsman on the UW crew, it is evident to me how much I learned from that experience and how I have been able to apply the values I gained throughout the rest of my life. Rowing is a sport that does build character, determination and teamwork, and today I consider it my privilege to support the Crew House project so that other student-athletes also may benefit in a similar way.

As a former varsity athlete at UW-Madison, I earned my "W" not in rowing, but in football. I have, however, always admired the spirit and dedication shown by the young men and women who compete in Badger crews, and I continue to hold them in the highest regard. For this reason, I am very pleased to make a significant gift in support of the Crew House renovation.
