What they are saying

Heading into its season opener this weekend, the Wisconsin men's soccer team attracted some media coverage this week. Check out the articles below before the Badgers take on Santa Clara on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the UC Irvine College Classic.

Incoming freshman Tennyson and team earn national runner-up finish

Soon-to-be UW freshman Joey Tennyson helped Shattuck-St. Mary's to a national runner-up finish in the U.S. Youth Soccer Boys Under-18 National Championship Series over the weekend. Oregon's EastSide United Liverpool Red bested Shattuck 1-0 in Sunday's national title game in Overland Park, Kan.

NCAA announces change in women's soccer championship format

| No TrackBacks
The NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet approved a recommendation to change the women's postseason championships to a 1-1-2-2 format beginning in the fall of 2011, the NCAA announced Friday.

Now, the first round of the NCAA tournament will be held at 32 on-campus sites and the following week, the second round will be held at 16 on-campus sites.

The best around

The Wisconsin men's soccer team will have a new head coach patrolling the home team bench at the McClimon Complex this fall, after John Trask was hired to take over the program last week.

The man between the benches -- at the scorer's table -- will be the same, however. And, interestingly enough, he has a pretty impressive coaching resume of his own.

What they're saying about Trask

John Trask came on board Wednesday as the sixth head coach in the history of the Wisconsin men's soccer program. Here's a sampling of some of the local coverage his hiring has received over the past couple of days.

Yeagley to coach at MLS Combine

Men's soccer head coach Todd Yeagley has picked up some extra work for the offseason.

Yeagley was announced Thursday as a coach for the upcoming 2010 adidas MLS Player Combine, which is set for Jan. 8-12 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He will lead Team F50i along with Larry Sunderland, Director of Player Personnel for the MLS' Chicago Fire.

History with the Hoosiers

When the final weekend of conference play shook out last Saturday and the matchups were finalized for this week's Big Ten Conference Tournament, it was rather fitting that the fifth-seeded Badgers drew No. 4 seed Indiana for Thursday's quarterfinals.

Thursday's match in Bloomington will mark the 39th renewal of Wisconsin's series with Indiana, the Badgers' most-played rivalry. Add in the Indiana ties of UW head coach Todd Yeagley and assistants Ernie Yarborough and Chris Munroe, and there are plenty of storylines in the Badgers' matchup with Hoosiers.
