Hey Badger Fans!
This post is different from the usual recap of games or highlight of upcoming events, well somewhat. In celebration of the countdown to the 2014 Fill the Bowl game on Feb. 15 against Minnesota, this blog will highlight some of my favorite memories from my past Fill the Bowls as a Badger.
The first Fill the Bowl I participated in was on January 29, 2011 as a freshman. Adjusting to the college stage and playing in front of a few thousand fans is enough of an adjustment already, but to have the opportunity to play in front of 10,668 spectators was something I never even imagined. We were expecting about 5,000 fans, and to shatter that number was amazing. I remember walking out into the Kohl Center and seeing a packed student section, hearing the fans scream louder than ever before, and the ultimate highlight came of course when we defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers. It is always fun to win when playing such a powerhouse opponent, but to win on home ice in front of such an amazing crowd was something I will never forget.
Just when I thought that experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I learned we were hosting another Fill the Bowl the following year. We hosted Bemidji State that weekend and had a close game the night before, stealing the win in overtime. Coming out on the ice for my second Fill the Bowl was a similar breath-taking experience, but it was even grander! 12,402 fans showed up for Fill the Bowl my sophomore year, and the crowd propelled us to a win yet again. Playing in front of that many fans is amazing, especially for a women's sport where we don't have too many experiences quite like that. The atmosphere and energy that starts pumping when you get all those people in the Kohl to cheer us on is pretty incredible! Not to mention I scored a goal that night, but it was called back after it was argued the puck went in after the goalie may or may not have taken off her own helmet. Nevertheless, the crowd still cheered until we learned it was called back.
So fans, my challenge to you is this: come out this year, February 15 and watch as No. 2 Wisconsin fights to knock off No. 1 Minnesota. Students get in free, and general admission tickets are only a dollar as we look to break our NCAA single game attendance record! This could be the biggest series of the season, and there is no place we would rather play than in front of our home crowd. For the senior class, we look to finish our final regular season off in the same building it all started with a win!
Get your tickets, bundle up, and make your way out to the Kohl Center for what is set to be the best Fill the Bowl yet!
Until next time, thanks for reading, and On Wisconsin!
