It seems like an eternity since the Badgers have played at home, and indeed it was Dec. 15. They have been on the road ever since for four games. Today's game is the only meeting of the 2012-13 season between the Badgers and Gophers so all 40 points in the Border Battle are on the line. Minnesota currently leads this season's all-sport contest 155-85. Now in its ninth season, the Border Battle is currently tied at four wins apiece.

The Badgers dropped to 11-20 all-time in Big Ten openers after falling at No. 25 Nebraska, 70-52 on Wednesday. Wisconsin is 17-13 in Big Ten home openers, dating back to the 1982-83 season.

There is some sad news to report. The Badgers will only have nine healthy players the rest of the season. Senior Taylor Wurtz has elected to take a medical redshirt for the rest of the 2012-13 season. The 6-0 guard has been bothered by a re-occurring back problem this season. And sophomore AnnMarie Brown had surgery for a torn ACL suffered in practice Dec. 18. She is out for the season as well.

The 2012-13 season marks the ninth edition of the Border Battle competition between the athletic programs of Wisconsin and Minnesota. 
The eighth found the Badgers sweeping the last three Big Ten championships to come from behind to win the trophy 455-425. The win ties the series, which dates back to 2004-05, at four wins apiece. The Gophers had won the past three competitions, including the second-closest contest in 2010-11 when Minnesota won 455 to 425.
Forty points are assigned for the competition in each sport and since the Badgers and Gophers play each other only once this season, all 40 points are on the line today.

Wisconsin ranks second in the Big Ten in free throw percentage at .772. UW is sixth in rebounding offense at 40.4, fifth in scoring defense (56.6), tied for fifth in blocks per game (4.7) and sixth in 3 pointers made per game (5.4). 
Individually, junior Tiera Stephen ranks second with 2.8 steals per game and fifth with 5.4 assists per game. Junior Morgan Paige is eighth in scoring at 16.9 points per game and ninth in free throw percentage at .807. Junior Cassie Rochel is tied for first with 2.6 blocks per game and sixth with 7.8 rebounds per game.

Junior Cassie Rochel recorded her second career double-double at Nebraska on Jan. 2. Rochel led the team with 15 points and grabbed 10 boards in the Big Ten opener. The 6-4 forward also played a career-high 39 minutes in the contest. 
Rochel has turned up her defense this season, tallying at least one block in 13-of-14 games this season, including a career-high five blocks in three games. She leads the team and shares the Big Ten lead with 2.7 blocks per game.

Freshman Nicole Bauman leads the Badgers with a 90.9 percentage at the free throw line. The 5-10 guard is 10-of-11 at the charity stripe this season, making five perfect trips to the line with her only miss coming on Nov. 11 against Milwaukee. 
On the year, Bauman has started the last nine games and ranks fourth on the team with 6.4 points per game.

What had been a close stat got away from the Badgers at the end of the half and that is rebounding. Minnesota had lots of additional looks with 25 boards to UW's 16. There seemed to be two UW players going for the  ball sometimes, and then they would back off in a miscommunications. Need to be relentless on the boards.

The 3 point shooting has been horrendous. Hopefully Nicole Bauman can get her shot going. We need everyone to be a scoring threat.

And cutting down on unforced errors needs to happen. UW has done a good job of breaking the press.
