Tam Flarup chronicled all the action from today's exhibition game between the Badgers (0-0) and the UW-LaCrosse (0-0) with the live Gameday Blog. The Badgers beat the Eagles 90-39 at the Kohl Center. Sophomore Jacki Gulczynski lead all scores with 18 points.

The Badgers kick off their 2012-13 season this week by hosting two exhibition games. Wisconsin (9-20 in 2011-12) hosts intrastate foe UW-La Crosse (16-10) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Kohl Center. On Sunday, Concordia-St. Paul (11-17) comes to town for a 2 p.m. game in the Kohl Center.

Head coach Bobbie Kelsey kicks off her second season as the Badgers head coach. Kelsey led UW to a 9-20 mark last season and tied for ninth in the Big Ten at 5-11.

Wisconsin returns two of their top three scorers for 2012-13. Senior Taylor Wurtz led the Badgers with 16.1 points per game while junior Morgan Paige added a season-high 10 points per game. NOTE: Wurtz WILL NOT PLAY tonight due to a back injury. She hopes to return for the UW-Milwaukee game Nov. 11.

The Badgers return 60 percent of their scoring and 59 percent of their rebounding. Wurtz is the UW's top returning rebounder with 7.6 rebounds per game. Junior Cassie Rochel was third on the team last season with 4.2 rebounds per game.

There is also a new look to the Badgers, and its not just there warmups. Kelsey also welcomes seven newcomers to her team, including two transfers. Juniors Michala Johnson (UConn) and Daria Kryuchkova (Jacksonville College) bring experience though Johnson will have to sit out the season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Last year's Badger team was the best 3-point shooting and free throw shooting team in UW history. Wisconsin set overall and Big Ten-season records for 3-pointers made and attempted as well as free throw percentage.

Kelsey is joined on the Badger bench by second-year assistant coaches Alysiah Bond and Stacy Cantley. Newcomer Jayme Callahan joins the UW coaching staff for her first season, replacing Kyle (Black) Rechlicz, who was named the head coach at Milwaukee. Callahan comes to Wisconsin from Clemson University.

The long ball was a friend to the Badgers last season. The Badgers set single game and Kohl Center records for 3-pointers made in 2011-12. UW set a school record at Ohio State on Feb. 6, making 12 3-pointers. Wisconsin shot 12-of-24 (50 percent) from 3-point range, breaking the previous record of 11 treys set in seven different games, including three games earlier in the season.

The top three-point shooters all return. Morgan Paige set the individual Kohl Center record by making six 3-pointers against the Wildcats. The previous mark was five treys set by six other Badgers, most recently by Taylor Wurtz against Michigan on Jan. 10, 2010.

One player I am looking forward to seeing play is Makaila Dyer. I was the communications contact for UW when her mom  Janet and aunt Theresa played on the same terrific team in the early 80s. They actually could perform the allyoop when women were not doing that. Janet was a terrific point guard and Theresa was an undersized by big leaping center. Theresa went on to become the all-time leading scorer for quite a few years, and still owns the UW rebound record.

Other newcomers include freshman Shannon Malone who is the first Badger from the state of Texas, though she was born in Green Bay, Wis. She moved to Ohio when she was one and to Texas when she was seven.

Freshman Dakota Whyte has been a three-time member of the Canadian Junior National Team. The 5-8 guard was a member of the 2012 Canadian Junior National Team but had to withdraw for personal reasons. She was also a member of the Canadian team in 2010, competing in the Youth Olympic Games, and in 2011, competing in the 3-on-3 Youth World Championships.

Freshman Nicole Bauman is the first Miss Wisconsin Basketball to sign at UW since Lin Zastrow signed in 2007. The 5-7 guard from New Berlin Eisenhower High School was also named the Gatorade State Player of the Year. Bauman averaged 17 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 3.1 steals per game as a senior.
