The Badgers are coming off a tough two-point loss at Marquette Tuesday. A three-point lead with 2 minutes to go slipped away as UW lost 54-52 at the Al McQuire Center. The other loss on the season was last Sunday to a very tough Oral Roberts team, 80-63. UW won the season -opening game of the Bobbie Kelsey with a win at Milwaukee, 68-51.

All of basketball is today mourning the loss of Oklahoma State coach Kurt Budke and his assistant Miranda Serna who yesterday perished in a plane crash while on a recruiting trip. It makes everyone realize just how fragile life is especially with how many miles the coaches and teams travel to pursue this endeavor. We will be taking a moment of silence to remember them tonight.

With the graduation of so many scorers, 61 percent of the scoring, and 42 percent of the rebounding, everyone wondered who would step up. Junior Taylor Wurtz is averaging a double-double on theseason, leading the Badgers with 15.3 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. The 6-0 forward has scored in double figures in all three games and had double-figure rebounds in two games.

Tam Flarup:
Wurtz led UW with 17 points and 14 rebounds at Milwaukee. She tied her career high with five assists and added two steals while shooting 50 percent from the field.
Against Oral Roberts, Wurtz scored 15 points and tied her career best with 15 rebounds. Her rebounding total tied the Kohl Center individual record, originally set by Jessie Stomski vs. Oklahoma on Jan. 24, 2000.

Speaking of Jessie Stomski, she and several other former Badgers are having a reunion in the Twin Cities this weekend when former UW coach Jane Albright brings her current team (University of Nevada) to a tournament at Minnesota Friday and Saturday. Here is a shout out to all the old gang at Williams Arena.

Tam Flarup:
Rebounding is definitely stressed by coach Kelsey since it is what allows the team to get out and run. Wisconsin leads the Big Ten in rebounding defense, giving up just 27.3 rebounds per game. The Badgers have outrebounded all three opponents this season and are averaging 43.3 rebounds per game. UW ranks second in the conference in rebounding margin at plus 16.0.
Taylor Wurtz leads the Big Ten with 11.7 rebounds per game while Anya Covington is tied for third with 10.3 boards per game.

Tam Flarup:
Sophomore Morgan Paige has started the last two games and is averaging 10 points per game over the stretch. The 5-9 guard led the Badgers with a career-high 16 points at Marquette. Paige is shooting a team-best .556 (10-of-18) from the field. She has nearly tripled her scoring from last season, ranking second on the team this season with 9.7 points per game.

Tam Flarup:
Senior Anya Covington tied her career best with 12 rebounds vs. Oral Roberts and also added 11 rebounds at Marquette. She has double-figure rebounding in nine games in her career, including the last two in a row.
Covington ranks second on the team and ties for third in the Big Ten with 10.3 rebounds per game, more than double her season average of 4.1 from last year.

Tam Flarup:
Wisconsin tied a school record and tied a Kohl Center record, making 11 3-pointers. The Badgers have made 11 treys in four other games, including at Purdue last season.
Taylor Wurtz led the UW with four 3-pointers while Kelly Supernaw hit a career best three 3-pointers. Jade Davis also scored three treys and Morgan Paige added one long ball. The Badgers are shooting 32.8 percent from beyond the arc through three games.

Tam Flarup:
Supernaw scored her first points as a Badger, tallying nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc, against Oral Roberts.
A transfer from Concordia (Minn.), Supernaw was eligible the second semester of the 2010-11 season but did not play.
She has played in all three games this season, averaging 3.0 points, 0.7 rebounds and 8.0 minutes per game. Supernawa leads the team, shooting 42.9 percent from 3-point range.

The Cougars The Cougars (1-1) opened their season on the road at the Lady Lion Classic hosted by Penn State. Led by Carly Noyes' 16 points, WSU earned its first win of the year Sunday, defeating UNC Wilmington 72-60 in the final game of the tournament.
WSU had No. 12/14 Penn State on the ropes until a late second-half surge by the Lady Lions handed the Cougars a season-opening 72-60 defeat Friday evening. WSU forced PSU into 24 turnovers and held a 60-59 lead with 7:12 remaining before the Lady Lions put the clamps down on the Cougar offense to come away with the win. Penn State was picked to win the Big Ten this year by the media and coaches.
