It is exciting to begin a new era of women's basketball under former Stanford assistant Bobbie Kelsey. I was fortunate to have worked 16-straight NCAA Women's Final Fours, many of them involving the Stanford team. She brings a unique experience as a winner at the highest levels to the Badger program.

The Badgers opened the exhibition season Thursday with a 70-54 win over Division III UW-Whitewater. UW broke the game open with a 20-0 scoring run early in the first half. Ashley Thomas led all scores with 17 points missing only one shot all night. Cassie Rochel showed her rebounding prowess with 12 boards.

It wasn't a pretty game, however. UW had 30 turnovers, many unforced as they continue to learn the new triangle offense Kelsey has introduced. Passing was a concern cited by the coach in the post game news conference. It will be a work in progress Kelsey said.

Who will step up? Who will fill the scoring and rebounding rolls? Perhaps a good indication came Thursday with Ashley Thomas collecting 17 points and 6-4 sophomore Cassie Rochel grabbing 12 boards.
