Spring Break reflections

springbreak_BLOG.jpgIn this week's softball blog, head coach Yvette Healy writes about the team's spring break to California. Check back to UWBadgers.com for regular updates throughout the season.

What a great Spring Break! We arrived in California on Thursday and drove up the coast to Santa Barbara. Friday started with a tough loss to San Diego, but the team bounced back to beat the host team, University of California Santa Barbara. It's always tough to play teams on the road. They already had five wins at home, so it was a great "W" for us. Saturday we were able to beat San Diego, and lost a tough one to UCSB. The tournament ended in dramatic fashion with a big win over UNLV. I'm so proud of this group. They fight and battle, even when facing adversity.

Coaching can be challenging, especially when you're on the road and times are tough. Our staff knew that taking over a program and trying to build a winning culture wouldn't be easy. Yet weeks like this, when you experience a few small victories along the way can be so rewarding; it's what keeps us in this profession.

We got great effort from the girls; they were passionate
and enthusiastic. A few even found aspringbreak4_BLOG_A.jpg way to battle through adversity and finish the week on a high note. Every athlete experiences ups and downs throughout the year. Slumps happen to everyone, and finding your swagger on the field is not an easy thing. Helping our athletes through those valleys to find their peaks is what it's all about.

After our first weekend, the winning ways continued and we rolled to eight straight wins, tying the school record for most wins in a row. We won all four games at Loyola Marymount, before winning our first two at the San Diego State tournament. We beat San Diego on Saturday and finished the trip 10-4. How incredible to win 10 games over Spring Break! We're 15-9 on the season right now as we head into Big Ten play this weekend at Penn State.

We still have a lot of work to do as a team and staff, but what a fun way to finish our pre-conference schedule. The scouting and prep work that Coach Schneider has done on each and every team has really paid off, giving our team and staff an edge over our opponents each time we step on the field. Our goal is to keep the excitement and enthusiasm going as we start Big Ten play! The Badgers are playing hard, sticking together and having fun. What more can you ask for?

Great job Badgers!
Good luck this weekend at Penn State
