Wisconsin had sought to repeat last season with an NCAA bid, but injuries have taken their toll on the Badgers and a first round loss to Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament destroyed hopes for an NCAA bid. However, the Badgers are alive in the WNIT for their fifth consecutive post-season appearance. It is the 14th post-season appearance in history. Wisconsin has qualified for seven NCAA championships and five WNIT tournaments. UW is 17-12 in 13 post-season appearances, including a 14-4 mark in the WNIT.

The Badgers have had some success in the WNIT. Wisconsin last competed in the WNIT in 2009, going 1-1 and losing in the quarterfinals to St. Bonaventure. The Badgers won the 2000 WNIT Championship, defeating Florida 75-74 in the title game, and finished as the runner-up champion in 2007, losing at Wyoming 72-56 in the championship game.

Tonight's opponent is a formidable opponent having finished second in the Horizon League to instate rival Green Bay. The Phoenix beat the Bulldogs by 11 points in the Horizon League Championship for their third loss of the year to Green Bay. This is Butler's third-straight appearance in the WNIT. They have had 20-win seasons the past three years.
Wednesday March 16, 2011 5:58
5:59
Wisconsin and Butler have met only once in program history. The Badgers won the only meeting, a 61-46 victory in Miami, Fla., on Nov. 29, 2003.
The two teams share three common opponents in 2010-11 - Saint Louis, Milwaukee and Green Bay. The Bulldogs were 1-0 vs. the Billikens, 1-1 vs. the Panthers, and 0-3 vs. the Phoenix. The Badgers were 1-0 vs. Saint Louis, 1-0 vs. Milwaukee and 0-1 vs. Green Bay.
Wednesday March 16, 2011 5:59
6:01
Led by a trio of seniors, all who average 10-or-more points per game, the Bulldogs put up 67.6 points per game. Butler allows 64.6 points per game. The seniors have combined to win 83 games over their careers which ranks fourth best in school history.
Wednesday March 16, 2011 6:01
6:03
Should the Badgers advance tonight, they would meet the winner of the Illinois State vs. Central Michigan game which takes place Thursday. UW has put in to host all games, but those decisions are made later when the opponents have been decided.
Wednesday March 16, 2011 6:03
6:11
I mentioned injuries earlier. The Badgers had every senior lose game time with injuries. Leading scorer Alyssa Karel missed 3 games with a knee injury; in the next game second leading scorer Lin Zastrow was out with a knee injury; Emily Neal missed a game with a broken nose; and five games ago, third leading scorer Tara Steinbauer tore her ACL and was done for the season.
Wednesday March 16, 2011 6:11
6:12
Through the adversity the Badgers suffered a seven game losing streak in the preseason, and got it together in the Big Ten Conference run tying for third but with a chance for the title or second place right to the end. The NCAA dream may have been shattered, but a WNIT would make up for a whole lot of hurt.
Wednesday March 16, 2011 6:12
6:14
In the last game senior Lin Zastrow went over 1,000 career points with 18 points vs. Illinois on March 3. The 6-4 post entered the game with 995 points. She became the 21st Badger player to tally 1,000-or-more points in a career. Zastrow also needs just six rebounds for 600 in her career. She is averaging 13.6 points per game and is tied with Taylor Wurtz as the leading rebounder with 6.4 caroms per game.

Butler is paced by senior Brittany Bowen, a 5-10 guard/forward, leads the team with 15.9 points per game. She also ranks second on the squad with 6.1 rebounds per game and second in 3-pointers made with 51. Bowen takes the most free throws on the team, going 111-of-128 (.867) from the line.

Butler has several players over 6-0 with the tallest 6-2 Dragana Grbic who has played in just 15 games. No one over six feet starts, although against the taller Badgers, the Bulldogs are expected to make an adjustment to their lineup. The Bulldogs were red-hot in January winning 8 of 9 games. But they limped through February with a 3-5 record. Including the tournament they have won 3 of their last four games.

We are expecting a sparse crowd tonight. It is spring break here, and the schools are out. But that may mean we get a bunch of kids who don't have to worry it is a school night. Butler is located in Indianapolis, so they probably don't have too many fans making that trip. Ironically, the Badgers were in Indy last week for the Big Ten tournament where they had the No. 6 seed but bowed out in the first round.

Butler still plays at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse which was featured in the movie Hoosiers. The first couple Big Ten Women's Tournaments in the 90s were held at Hinkle. It was a beautiful building and fun to play there, but I am glad the Big Ten Tourney moved to Conseco Fieldhouse. That is a gorgeous place to view and play a game.

Butler is on the floor warming up. The Badgers are back in the locker room for final instructions. Tara Steinbauer walked by on crutches. She had her surgery six days ago on March 10 and is doing pretty well she says. Hopes to ditch the crutches in a few more days. Good luck to her with that rehab.

We do have a small band here.....pretty small, but happy to see them especially since the school is on break. There are also bands accompanying the men's basketball team to Tucson for their NCAA 'second' round game Thursday at 6:27 p.m.. CT. Band members are also with our No. 1 ranked women's hockey team heading to the Frozen Four in Erie, PA. They play Friday at 4 p.m. CT. Good luck to all our Badger post season squads (wrestling and swimmers are at NCAAs too).

Butler only pressed the last play of the game. It will be interesting to see what they do to start the second half. The press didn't bother us on that one play, but it did take time off the clock. BUT, we beat them on a back door with it so maybe that will be cautionary.
