Opening weekend

In this week's blog entry, head coach Yvette Healy writes about the team's successful opening weekend at the Texas Invitational. Check back to UWBadgers.com for regular updates throughout the season.

What a great opening weekend for the Badger Softball team! We opened up in beautiful Austin, Texas. The weather was perfect the entire weekend, with mostly 70 degree temperatures at game time. We arrived on Wednesday night and got to practice Thursday morning on Texas' field before our opening games later that night. The team was so focused, enthusiastic and aggressive at practice; it set the tone for the entire trip.

We won our 2011 season opener against Texas State Thursday afternoon. Texas State has won their conference the last few years and has the two-time pitcher of the year. We were so proud of our young pitchers and athletes that they battled such an experienced and successful team. One of our freshman pitchers, Cassandra Darrah, threw that game. She had a no-hitter going into the 6th inning!

We found time to see the city of Austin a bit and stopped for some amazing BBQ one night.  Stephanie Peace, our freshman shortstop, is from Texas and her family hosted a great tailgate for everyone after one of our games. Steph almost hit for the cycle that night, getting a home run, triple and double. I guess playing in front of family and friends helps!

The team hit .311 on the weekend, which is amazing for the first days competing. Senior Jennifer Kruger hit .500 with 5 stolen bases, and junior Karla Powell had 3 home runs and 6 RBIs on the weekend. Our coaching staff is so pleased with the leadership we got from our older athletes and the spark of energy infused by our freshmen.
