I am the former athletic communications contact for women's basketball, and although now three years removed, still enjoy following the players. This senior class were freshmen in my last year of covering the team and it has been fun to see their progress.

This is the Big Ten home opener for the Badgers (6-7, 1-0). The Badgers opened the Big Ten season at Purdue Dec. 30 with a 66-64 win which stopped a 22-game losing streak in West Lafayette dating back to 1984. It was first conference opening win since the 2006-07 season. UW also won on the road to open the conference season for the first time since 1994-95.

UW tied a school record by making 11 3-pointers at Purdue. Taylor Wurtz led the way by going 5-of-7 from behind the arc.

After enduring a seven-game non-conference losing streak, the Badgers have won their last four games, the longest winning streak of the season. UW opened its season with two wins and is 6-7 on the season.

Penn State won its Big Ten opener at home over No. 14 Iowa, 68-59. The Lady Lions are 12-3 on the season. The 11 non-conference wins are the most for the Lady Lions since 1984-85.

UW is 8-7 against Penn State in Madison, but 9-25 overall. PSU won the contest 54-43 last January in Madison. UW returned the favor winning 71-39 for just the second time in happy valley.

Wisconsin dished off a season-high 15 assists at Purdue and turned the ball over only 11 times, which is the second-lowest game total this season. UW struggled with the turnovers earlier in the season and is averaging 16.6 TOs per game.

Today's game vs. Penn State will pit the Badgers' tough defense against the Nittany Lions high-scoring offense. PSU leads the Big Ten with 84.5 points per game while the UW ranks third in defense, giving up 58.2 points per game.

UW's pack defense may be challenged today. The Lady Lions lead the nation in three-point shooting hitting 43.9 percent. The Badgers will have to get out on the perimeter and challenge the shooters leaving the middle vulnerable.

Senior Lin Zastrow is still sporting the residue of a black eye suffered in Drake win Dec. 9. She has played well in the past few games and leads all players in the Big Ten in field goal percentage hitting 60.9 percent. The 6-4 post player has converted 42-of-69 from the floor and is second on the team in free throw shooting converting 75 percent.

The Rose Bowl loss is still stinging. What a good game though. TCU played very well and showed they were the No. 3 team. UW had some uncharacteristic gaffs but had some good moments too. The crowd at Camp Randall West was also incredible. Hopefully the players will find some comfort in winning a share of the Big Ten title and playing in such a special bowl. They gave us lots of thrills this season.

The upcoming Big Ten Schedule doesn't get any easier for the Badgers as they travel to No. 12 Michigan State Thursday, then host Minnesota Jan. 9 in a game at either 1 or 3 p.m. at the Kohl Center. UW gets Purdue again on Jan. 13, then hits the road for games at Michigan Jan. 16 and Minnesota Jan. 20. The final home game in Jan. is the 23rd with Illinois.
