The Badgers (9-8, 4-1) defeated Purdue (11-6, 2-3) 60-46 to move to 4-1 in the Big Ten Conference and maintain second place. It was the first sweep of the Boilermakers since 1984. Follow the live gameday blog for all the details.

I am the former athletic communications contact for women's basketball, and although now three years removed, still enjoy following the players. These seniors were freshmen in my last year of covering the team and it has been fun to see their progress.

The Badgers are in soul possession of second place after downing Minnesota last Sunday, 47-42. Wisconsin trails only No. 11 Michigan State, which leads the league at 3-0. Penn State is in third place at 2-1 while Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern and Purdue are all tied for fourth at 2-2.

Senior Lin Zastrow returned from a head injury to lead all players with a career high 21 points vs. Minnesota. The 6-foot-4 post missed the Michigan State game on Jan. 6 but returned to the UW starting lineup, going 7-of-13 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line, including two freebies with 11 seconds remaining to seal the win. She also pulled down three rebounds while leading all players with three assists and three blocks. Check out this great story on Lin written by Dennis Punzel of Madison.com.

Just how much do the Badgers miss post player Lin Zastrow? A lot!
     Zastrow has missed four games this season--three during Thanksgiving week and one Big Ten game at Michigan State. Wisconsin is 0-4 when Zastrow does not play. The Badgers average just 50 points without the 6-4 post compared to 60.8 points with her.

UW ended a difficult non-conference season with a 5-7 record which included a streak of seven straight losses. Since Drake on Dec. 12, the Badgers are 6-1. Wisconsin is ranked 52nd in the NCAA RPI released this week. The Badgers are the seventh team in the Big Ten. Iowa leads the league in 10th while Ohio State is 14th and Michigan State 16th.

Wisconsin has improved in several areas since the start of the season. In their last five games, the Badgers have tallied 15-or-fewer turnovers per game. Wisconsin is averaging just 13.2 TOs per game during the stretch.
     Wisconsin struggled with turnovers in late November and early December, tallying more than 20 turnovers in three of seven games. 
     UW turned the ball over just 10 times at Michigan State on Jan. 6, the second-lowest single-game total of the season. The Badgers also had only 11 turnovers at Purdue on Dec. 30.

Wisconsin has struggled from the field its last two games, shooting just 33.7 percent (29-of-86) from field goal range. The Badgers are also shooting just 18.5 percent (5-of-27) from 3-point range.
      UW has also been outrebounded its last two games 85-46, including a 45-21 edge by Michigan State on Jan. 6.

In a twist of scheduling, Wisconsin is playing several opponents just weeks apart. The Badgers opened the Big Ten season at Purdue Dec. 30 winning 68-66 for the first time since 1984 in West Lafayette. Yes, 1984. That isn't a typo. Wisconsin had 22-straight losses in Mackey Arena. But the page has turned as the Badgers have won 3 of the last four contests with Purdue.

The way Lisa Stone approaches games is no one game is bigger than another. So the players try and keep an even keel as they approach each game. The players are used to either being on the Big Ten Network, or having their games streamed on bigtennetwork.com. That is what is terrific about being in the Big Ten Conference....national exposure for all games.
