EVANSTON, Ill. - The Wisconsin wrestling team is suited up and ready to go for the 2010 Midlands Championships at the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., today and tomorrow.

Allison Metcalf from the Wisconsin Athletics Communications office will provide updates throughout the first day on this page.

The Badger wrestlers left the hotel this this morning before the sun had risen at 6:15 a.m because all 32 participating teams had weigh-ins beginning at 7 a.m.

9:08 a.m. - I just received the bracket with Session I matchups. Session I begins at 9:30 a.m. (CT).

*moved up one seed since final tournament seed meeting last night

9:30 a.m. - Shawn Perry will hit the mat in an 157 lbs. battle against No. 9 seed Barret Abel (Cal Poly)

9:34 a.m. - It was just announced that there are 334 wrestlers competing in this year's Midlands!

9:36 a.m. - Abel just defeated Perry and there are currently no Wisconsin wrestlers competing at this time

9:56 a.m. - Shane McQuade is on mat 7 set to battle Northern Illinois' Nick Smith at 125 lbs.

10:04 a.m. - McQuade worked tirelessly against UNI's Smith, but dropped the match and Smith walked away with a 11-2 major decision

10:13 a.m.  - No. 1 seed Tyler Graff (133 lbs.) is warming up and getting ready to take on Maryland's Lou Ruland on mat 4. Like always, Graff is starting off his match with several quick moves for a "fast attack" approach.

10:20 a.m. - Graff currently holds an 11-3 advantage over Ruland with about one minute left in the second period. SIDE NOTE: I just received permission to post the Session I bracket.

10:24 a.m. - Graff just obtained a 19-8 major decision over Ruland. Graff will advance and looks to capture his second-straight Midlands title after becoming the 2009 Midlands Champion at 133 lbs.

10:41 a.m. - At 141 lbs., No. 6 seed Todd Schavrien (Missouri) captured a 16-0 technical fall victory over Danny Arnel in the third period. It looks like No. 6 seed Cole Schmitt is warming up and will be the next Badger featured on the mat in the 149 lb. match v. Corey Phillips (Eastern Michigan).

10:56 a.m. - Schmitt is now out on the mat against Eastern Michigan's Phillips. The fans continue to pour into the doors of the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. for the 48th annual Midlands Championships. I would say at this point, the stands are roughly 3/4 full.

11:06 a.m. - Another win for the Badgers! Cole Schmitt recently slated a 16-0 technical fall victory in 6:58 over Eastern Michigan's Corey Phillips. It was just announced that 2009 Midlands Champion at 165 lbs, Andrew Howe (No. 1 seed), squares off against Michael Moreno (Iowa State-unattached) soon on Mat 6.

11:17 a.m. - After starting the tournament off with a BYE, Kalvin York (157 lbs.) is now on Mat 1 and is taking on in-state foe Dillon Bera of UW-Parkside. On the other side of the arena, No. 1 seed Andrew Howe (165 lbs.) is off the mat, quietly preparing for his match against Moreno of Iowa State.

11:26 a.m. - Wisconsin's Kalvin York just recently dropped a 3-0 decision to UW-Parkside's Bera while Howe currently has a 7-1 advantage over Moreno with one minute left in the second period.

11:33 a.m. - Andrew Howe is en route to another Midlands title. At 165 lbs., the junior just conquered Iowa State's (unattached) Michael Moreno with a 17-5 major decision in his first match of the day. There are currently no Badger wrestlers on any of the mats at this time. The arena floor is packed with eight matches going on at once throughout the day.

11:46 a.m. - Still no Badgers on the mat, so it's time for a little tidbit about Wisconsin head coach Barry Davis. Coach Davis only eats Subway on road trips. He says, "By always eating the same thing while on the road, I never have to think about what I am going to eat for the next meal. It puts my mind at ease and I can focus on coaching." Conveniently enough for Coach Davis, there is a Subway just a couple blocks away from our hotel.

11:55 a.m. - It looks like junior Travis Rutt (184 lbs., No. 3 seed) is on the sidelines getting the zone in preparation to take on Kelan Bragg of Cal Poly on Mat 1.

12:18 p.m. - Travis Rutt just obtained another win for the Badgers by notching a 7-2 decision over Caly Poly's Kelan Bragg.

12:27 p.m. - It was just announced that the pigtail consolations will begin shortly.

12:51 p.m. - Ben Jordan fell to Iowa's Mike Evans in the 174 lb. match and Derrick Borlie captured a 9-1 major decision over Northwestern's Marcus Shrewsbery. Bugenhagen is finally on the mat at heavyweight.

1:01 p.m. - As Bugenhagen continues to battle Greenhaw, Wisconsin's Kalvin York just stepped on the floor to compete against teammate Shawn Perry on Mat 6 in the consolation bracket at 157 lbs.

1:51 p.m. - It was just announced that as of five minutes ago, the Badgers are now in 10th place while Missouri is in first place and Clarion and Iowa are now tied for second.

2:03 p.m. - At 141 lbs., Danny Arnel is currently wrestling against Bucknell's Zac Hancock.

2:11 p.m. - In a hard-fought battle, Bucknell's Zac Hancock grabbed an 11-1 major decision over Wisconsin's Danny Arnel at 141 lbs.

2:16 p.m. - After capturing a technical fall victory (16-1, 6:58) over Eastern Michigan's Corey Phillips, Schmitt is now on Mat 2 contending against Nebraska's Ross Grande. With 1:21 left in the first period, Schmitt currently leads Grande, 2-0.

2:25 p.m. - Cole Schmitt will advance in the 149 lb.-bracket after slating a 6-2 decision (with riding time) over Nebraska's Ross Grande.

Don't forget, Howe is looking to score back-to-back Midlands titles after obtaining gold hardwood at the 2009
Midlands Championships.

2:45 p.m. - Junior Andrew Howe just hit the mat in his second match of the day. This time he faces Eastern Michigan's Nick Hendrick.

2:46 p.m. - In the opening minute of the battle, Howe pulled a smooth move to earn a takedown and take a 2-0 lead over Hendrick.

2:50 p.m. - So far, Howe has notched four takedowns including one after using a single-leg approach to lead Hendrick 8-3 with 45 seconds left in the second period.

2:54 p.m. - Howe pins Hendrick at 6:36 to continue his run at the 2010 Midlands Championships title.

2:55 p.m. - In his second match of the consolation bracket, Kalvin York defeated Bucknell's Czapla, 6-4 and will continue in the wrestlebacks tomorrow at 157 lbs.

3:16 p.m. - We are currently in a Badger drought as no Wisconsin representatives have wrestled since Howe and York captured their victories. However, by the looks of it Ben Jordan (174 lbs.) and Travis Rutt (184 lbs.) are warming up on the sidelines. Jordan will take on Mikey England of Iowa State in his first match of the consolation bracket while Rutt looks to continue his journey to the 184 lb. title. Rutt squares off in his second match of the day against Arizona State's (unattached) Kevin Radford. Earlier in the day Radford defeated Dillon Kern of Central Michigan, 11-6. The next UW representative will be Eric Bugenhagen in the heavyweight matchup where he takes on Central Michigan's Jarod Trice.
