The Badger women's basketball team defeated Winona State 82-53 in the season-opening exhibition Thursday, Nov. 4 at the Kohl Center.

I am the former athletic communications contact for women's basketball, and although now three years removed, still enjoy following the players. This senior class were freshmen in my last year of covering the team and it has been fun to see their progress.

This promises to be a special season with the terrific senior leardership of forwards Tara Steinbauer, Lin Zastrow and guards Alyssa Karel and Emily Neal. Tonight is the first of two exhibitions this week. On Sunday, UW hosts NCAA Division III UW-Superior at 1:30 p.m. in the Kohl Center.

Here are a couple of important notes on the Badgers. Senior Alyssa Karel was named a preseason All-Big Ten pick by league media. Karel, a 5-7 guard, was a unanimous second-team All-Big Ten pick last season. She led the Badgers and ranked 11th in the Big Ten with 14.3 points per game. Karel was the UW's leading scorer in 18 games, scoring in double figures in 26 of 32 games. The St. Paul, Minn., native scored a career-high 31 points in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals against No. 10 Ohio State.

Wisconsin was not picked as one of the top-three teams in the preseason coaches or media polls.
Reigning Big Ten champion Ohio State is picked to win its seventh-straight Big Ten title while Iowa, which tied for third with the Badgers last season, was picked second in both polls. Michigan State was third in the coaches poll while the Spartans and Purdue tied for third in the media poll.

The Badgers receives votes in the preseason Associated Press poll released Oct. 29. UW picks up eight votes in the poll and is tied for 37th in the preseason rankings. Wisconsin has not been ranked or received votes on the preseason poll since the 2000-01 season, when it entered the year ranked 18th.
In 2009-10, the Badgers received votes in the AP poll for nine weeks, including the final ranking.

UW's season opener is at St. Louis Nov. 12. The home opener is Sunday, Nov. 14 at noon with William and Mary.
The Badgers face four preseason top-25 teams in 2010-11. Duke, which Wisconsin takes on the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 2 in the Kohl Center, is ranked sixth. Three Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 25 led by No. 7 Ohio State. Iowa and Michigan State are ranked 22nd and 25th, respectively.

Wisconsin is coming off one of it's best seasons in years with a third place Big Ten finish and 21-11 record. The program had its first NCAA bid since 2001 and bowed out in the first round. The team is dedicated to a return to the NCAAs and a longer stay this season.

Defense has been the hallmark of the Badger program the last few years. UW ranked 24th nationally in scoring defense last season allowing just 56.2 points per game.
