I am Tam Flarup and I will serve as your blog host this season for all home events. I am the former athletic communications contact for women's basketball, and although now three years removed, still enjoy following the players. This senior class were freshmen in my last year of covering the team and it has been fun to see their progress.

The Badgers began the season last Thursday with an exhibition 83-52 win over Winona State. Senior Tara Steinbauer led the Badgers with a double double scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Newcomer Morgan Paige (Mo for short) had a terrific college debut scoring 12 points in 24 minutes. Lin Zastrow and Taylor Wurtz both added 10 points.
Sunday November 7, 2010 12:45
12:47
Today the Badgers will be without the services of leading scorer Alyssa Karel who turned up lame right before the half in the first exhibition. The diagnosis is a cartilage defect in the left kjnee and she is expected to miss several games including the season opener next Friday at St. Louis. She is in street clothes and using crutches today.
Sunday November 7, 2010 12:47

Making UW even thinner at guard is sophomore transfer Tiera Stephen who is out with a concussion. With the graduation of four-year starter Rae Lin D'Alie the point guard position was a question mark this season. The injury situation is demanding point guard be played by committee. With Karel out, Taylor Wurtz, Mo Paige and senior Emily Neal will all be counted on today to play the point.

Fans at today's event will receive a 2010-11 Wisconsin women's basketball team poster courtesy of Palermo's, while supplies last. Stick around after the game for an opportunity to get autographs and photos with your favorite Badger women's basketball players and coaches.

Here are a couple of important notes on the Badgers. Senior Alyssa Karel was named a preseason All-Big Ten pick by league media. Karel, a 5-7 guard, was a unanimous second-team All-Big Ten pick last season. She led the Badgers and ranked 11th in the Big Ten with 14.3 points per game. Karel was the UW's leading scorer in 18 games, scoring in double figures in 26 of 32 games. The St. Paul, Minn., native scored a career-high 31 points in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals against No. 10 Ohio State.

Wisconsin was not picked as one of the top-three teams in the preseason coaches or media polls.
Reigning Big Ten champion Ohio State is picked to win its seventh-straight Big Ten title while Iowa, which tied for third with the Badgers last season, was picked second in both polls. Michigan State was third in the coaches poll while the Spartans and Purdue tied for third in the media poll.

The Badgers receives votes in the preseason Associated Press poll released Oct. 29. UW picks up eight votes in the poll and is tied for 37th in the preseason rankings. Wisconsin has not been ranked or received votes on the preseason poll since the 2000-01 season, when it entered the year ranked 18th.
In 2009-10, the Badgers received votes in the AP poll for nine weeks, including the final ranking.

UW's season opener is at St. Louis Nov. 12. The home opener is Sunday, Nov. 14 at noon with William and Mary. The Badgers face four preseason top-25 teams in 2010-11. Duke, which Wisconsin takes on the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 2 in the Kohl Center, is ranked sixth. Three Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 25 led by No. 7 Ohio State. Iowa and Michigan State are ranked 22nd and 25th, respectively.

Wisconsin is coming off one of it's best seasons in years with a third place Big Ten finish and 21-11 record. The program had its first NCAA bid since 2001 and bowed out in the first round. The team is dedicated to a return to the NCAAs and a longer stay this season.

Defense has been the hallmark of the Badger program the last few years. UW ranked 24th nationally in scoring defense last season allowing just 56.2 points per game. UW held Winona State to 53 points and just 35 percent shooting on Thursday.

Badgers easily get the tip with the 6-4 Zastrow jumping. There are only two people over six feet on the Superior team, so the Badgers should have a rebounding advantage today.
Sunday November 7, 2010 1:37

I was reading in the WIAC notes that two of the Yellowjackets three wins were on the road last season. The road wins at UW-River Falls snapped a 40-game conference road losing streak. It is hard to evaluate them because they are so much shorter than the Badgers and so much different than the teams we typically face. I hope they have continued success this sesaon however.

We have so much height advantage in this game they have just been feeding the post and scoring. Not much to evaluate since their is so little resistance. Their isn't much continuity either with the players shuttling in and out so frequently which has also contributed to our nine first half TOS.

Any thought on how we will fare at the tourney over Thanksgiving? Anyway to draw much judgement yet?
Sunday November 7, 2010 2:31 Tim Rogers
2:33
The tournament will be interesting with two Big Ten teams playing so there won't be a championship game necessarily. BYU was 23-10 last season and advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals. St. Mary's was 21-10 in 2009-10 and lost in the first round of the WNIT tournament. The Badgers have had a lot of success over Thanksgiving the last two years, winning the Paradise Jam two years ago and the Oregon Invitational last year.

Sunday November 7, 2010 2:50

Morgan Paige continues to impress as she hits a 3-ptr. She has good speed and her line is terrific today hitting 2-of-2 from the field; 2 rebs; 1 asst, 1 to, 1 block, 1 steal and 19 minutes.

I said the Badgers would have a rebounding advantage today because of their height. And they have almost doubled up Superior on the boards with 31 rebounds to 17.
