Badgers earn No. 1 national ranking

The University of Wisconsin women's hockey team (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) earned the No. 1 national ranking this week in USCHO.com's poll, while the Badgers are currently No. 2 according to the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine national poll.

Wisconsin's No. 1 ranking marks the first time the Badgers find themselves atop the national polls since opening the 2009-10 season as No. 1 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll.

UW was last ranked No. 1 by USCHO.com in the final poll of 2008-09, taking the top spot in both national polls March 9-10, 2009. Wisconsin spent 15 weeks as USCHO.com's No. 1 pick during the 2008-09 season, including 11 consecutive weeks from Oct. 14, 2008 to Jan. 5, 2009.

The Badgers are second to top-ranked Cornell (0-0-0) in this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. Cornell finished as the national runner-up last season and opens its 2010-11 campaign against Robert Morris (1-5-0, 0-0-0 CHA) at home this weekend.

Minnesota Duluth (3-1-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) and Mercyhurst (5-1-0, 0-0-0 CHA) both already held the No. 1 ranking this season but dropped after falling to North Dakota (4-2-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) and Bemidji State (2-4-0, 0-2-0 WCHA), respectively.

The No. 1/2 Badgers host No. 10/9 Ohio State (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) in a battle of the unbeaten this weekend. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights at the Kohl Center.

Saturday's game is Breast Cancer Awareness Game. All fans that wear pink to the game will receive admission for $1 courtesy of UW Health. Fans arriving early will also receive a free Wisconsin Women's Hockey t-shirt courtesy of Becker Law Office, while supplies last. Finally, Saturday night also marks UW Student Day.
