Representing the U.S. national team, Wisconsin's Andrew Howe traveled to Baku-Azerbaijan on July 5. The defending 2010 NCAA champion is attending a training camp before the country hosts the Final Golden Grand Prix international wrestling tournament July 16-18.

Wrestlers from all over the world including Iran and Russia will compete in the three day tournament. Two representatives from each national team will wrestle in the international competition.

"I am excited for the training camp before the tournament and the tournament itself," Howe said. "It will be a great experience to travel with other American wrestlers but also train and compete with people from all around the world."

Howe has done a lot of weight training and conditioning in Madison throughout the summer and even spent a weekend in Colorado Springs. However, this is the first time this summer that the Cedar Lake, Ind. native will train and compete abroad.

This is the first large competition that Howe will participate in since placing second at the U.S. World Team Trials on June 11 (complete story).

Mr. Howe is simply a first rate athlete who is now admirably competing internationally for his country and university! I have been following him since his Freshman year when my daughter and he attended school orientation together, and he has done nothing but outperform all expectations, except for maybe his own. I wish him all the very best in Azerbaijan, and beyond!!
