2010 Golden Grand Prix

Junior Andrew Howe traveled to Baku, Azerbaijan July 5-18 to train for and compete in the 2010 Fila Golden Grand Prix international tournament at 74 kg.

In the international tournament, Howe fell to Azerbaijan's Chamsulvara Chamsulvaraev 1-0 and 2-1. Due to tournament rules, he was then eliminated when Chamsulvaraev lost his second match.
Despite the results, Howe left the country with a good feeling.

"It was so great to train and compete over there," Howe said. "It's a very good experience to compete against people from other countries because their style of wrestling is so much different than what we are taught in the United States.

"Their wrestling tactics are based more on skill than wrestling hard. They are very strategic when they wrestle."

The tournament included wrestlers from every weight class and several countries around the world including Azerbaijan's neighbors, Iran and Russia.

Although Howe spent much of his time in Azerbaijan wrestling, he was also able to see some of the capital city, Baku.

"It was really cool to be able to walk around the city," Howe said. "There are a lot of very contemporary buildings and also a lot of old buildings everywhere. It was definitely a lot different from the United States."
