 Women's Basketball NCAA Selection Show(03/15/2010)
5:34
Welcome to the Nicholas Suites of the Kohl Center where in less than a half hour, the 64-team bracket for the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship will be announced.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:34
5:35
The Badgers are practicing but will soon be up here to eat and watch the show, which starts at 6 p.m. If the show is anything like the men's show yesterday, it could be awhile before we find out if and where the UW will be playing.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:35
5:43
Wisconsin has made six appearances in the NCAA tournament and has a 2-6 record. The Badgers have advanced to the second round twice (1995 and 1996). The last time UW was in the tournament was in 2002 and this would be the Badgers seventh NCAA Tournament appearance
Monday March 15, 2010 5:43
5:44
n the NCAA RPI released March 8, the Badgers moved up one spot to 30th. Wisconsin is the third Big Ten school in the rankings behind No. 9 Ohio State and No. 16 Michigan State. Iowa jumped up eight spots to 43rd, Michigan dropped two spots to 52nd, Illinois is 62nd and Purdue 75th. All 11 conference teams are among the top 100 teams in the ranking.
The RPI is one of the tools that is used to select teams to the NCAA tournament.

5:47
That's right. UW has been picked by ESPN.com as a seventh seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament while two other Web sites have the UW as an eighth seed.

7th is much better--do not face a #1 in second round
Monday March 15, 2010 5:48 don
5:48
Definitely. No. 7 would be the preferred seed for the Badgers
Monday March 15, 2010 5:48
5:49
According to ESPN.com, as a seventh seed, Wisconsin will take on USC in the first round in Notre Dame, Ind. The winner will take on either Notre Dame or Cleveland State in the second round for the right to advance to the Kansas City Regional.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:49
5:49
CollegeRPI.com has the UW competing at Knoxville, Tenn., in the Memphis Regional. The site has the Badgers facing Vermont in the first round and the winner of the Tennessee vs. UC Davis game in the second round.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:49
5:50
RealTime has the Badgers competing at Stanford as part of the Sacramento Regional, taking on North Carolina in the first round. The winner would face the winner of Stanford vs. Hampton game in the second round.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:50
5:50
In 2009, five Big Ten teams competed in the NCAA tournament. The conference had only four teams qualify in 2008 and only three teams in 2007.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:50
5:50
In the last 10 years, an average of five teams compete in the post-season classic. The most teams in the tournament was six in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:50
5:51
Just a few more minutes until the selection show beings. The Badgers have yet to arrive but there is a decent crowd here already.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:51
5:51
To recap how we got here, the Badgers advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament for the second straight year. Wisconsin downed Purdue 73-51 in the quarterfinals before losing to then-No. 10 Ohio State 82-73 in the semifinals.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:51
5:53
The Badgers went 3-2 in their last five regular season games, including a heartbreaking overtime loss to Iowa and a hard-fought 83-78 loss to then-No. 7 Ohio State
Monday March 15, 2010 5:53
5:54
The coaching staff and their families, student managers and several media members have gathered here to watch the selection show together. We're still waiting on the guests of honor -- our team.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:54
5:55
The Badgers will obviously be going on the road for the NCAA Tournament, but that should be no problem for this year's squad.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:55
5:55
The Badgers are 12-5 (9-4 away and 3-1 neutral) on the road this season, including a 5-4 Big Ten road record, which is huge improvement from last season. In 2008-09, Wisconsin was 7-10 in road and neutral games and just 1-8 in Big Ten road games.
The 12 road wins sets the UW season record for most wins. Wisconsin won 11 road games in 1981-82 (11-12) and in 1995-96 (11-6).
Monday March 15, 2010 5:55
5:56
There is a chance the team will be headed to Minneapolis for the first and second round games, which would definitely be ideal to create a home-away-from-home setting.

Absolutely! This team has worked very hard and they are very deserving of a thrilling postseason run.

Coach Stone's efforts were rewarded this year as she was named the 2009-10 Big Ten Coach of the Year by her peers, marking her first Big Ten Coach of the Year award. She earned Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors at Drake in 2001 and was also a six-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:57
5:57
In other Big Ten awards, junior Alyssa Karel earned second-team honors by both coaches and media. Senior Rae Lin D'Alie was named to the All-Big Ten third team by media and earned honorable mention honors by the coaches.

UW has won 21 games this season, the eighth 20-win season in program history and the second under Coach Stone. UW's 21 victories ties for the second-most wins in a season. The Badgers also won 21 games in 1999-00, 1997-98, 1995-96 and 1981-82.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:59
5:59
Wisconsin won 20 games in the regular season, which ties the UW record for most regular-season wins, set in 1997-98. That Badger team finished the regular season 20-8 and went on to go 21-10 on the year, losing in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals and in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The UW record for most season wins is 23 (23-13), set in 2006-07.
Monday March 15, 2010 5:59

The team could tie that record with first- and second-round victories in the NCAA Tournament.

Too bad the commercials during the selection show are not as highly anticipated as those during the super bowl. That would definitely help pass the commercial breaks more quickly.
Monday March 15, 2010 6:07
6:10
The team has already had a record-breaking 2010 campaign.
On Feb. 14 vs. Indiana, senior Rae Lin D'Alie broke the UW career record for games played, consecutive games played and games started. The 5-3 guard played in her 125th straight game, breaking the Wisconsin mark for games played and consecutive games played of 124, held by Tamara Moore (1998-02) and LaTonya Sims (1997-01). D'Alie also broke the UW record for games started with her 124th start, breaking the old record of 123 games set by Jolene Anderson (2004-08).
D'Alie has now played in 131 straight games and started 130 games. Teammate Teah Gant is right behind D'Alie in number of games played with 130.

And we're definitely fortunate not to be meeting UConn in the first/second rounds.

A couple of the bracketologists had considered the idea of us going to Pittsburgh at an eight-seed, the obvious location for UConn to go.

So glad the committee agreed that we are a 7. Great place to be with a chance to advance.

Definitely, the team has a great chance to advance. Playing Notre Dame on their home court would be tough, but I know the team is up for a challenge.

Glad to see the support for Coach Stone. She really has done a great job with this year's team. They are in perfect position heading into the postseason.

good job! I think ND is beatable, there are no givings like UCONN. I believe everyone is beatable ( but hopefully not WI) - I think WI can go far. what do you think? How many treams in the pac-10

With the determination and dedication that this team is showing, I think they are capable of whatever they set out to do.

You think ND is beatable??? They lost 5 games this year, 3 to CONN. 1 to SJU, and 1 to Georgetown. All Top 20 Teams. They seemingly played UConn toughest out of anyone all year last game.

Anyone is beatable in the postseason. The slate is wiped clean as of now - everyone needs to win to stay alive, and the team that wants it the most can do it.

Even though a team is tough to beat, there can be upsets in the NCAA Tournament

Absolutely, that's what makes this time of year so much fun - the upsets and the underdogs
Monday March 15, 2010 7:02

UW has talked about having an underdog mentality all year long - they like to approach games that way because it helps them work harder.

Oops. Didn't Marquette beat them? Who did Marquette stun early. I apologize then. I am optimistic. I am just glad UCONN or Stanford are not in the bracket. Sometime told me this year that we are all playing for #2
Monday March 15, 2010 7:03 cathy
7:03
Nothing wrong with being an optimist! That's definitely a key part about tough games like this. The first step is believing - and this UW team does without a doubt.
