Archived Live Blog: 2010 Football Signing Day

Our coverage kicked off at 7 a.m. with a live blog from head coach Bret Bielema's office. Director of athletic communications Brian Lucas conveyed the news in real time. The blog was the first place to learn who had committed to UW and see how the day progressed.

Pretty quiet up here right now. The assistant coaches are rolling in. Sharon, one of the office assistants, is manning the fax machine while some of GAs are ready to run the letters down to the compliance office for final approval.

Fax machine break?
Wednesday February 3, 2010 8:37 Jim H
8:38
Brian Lucas:
No, thankfully. What happens is because the football office is on the opposite side of Camp Randall than the compliance office, they usually wait until they have a couple letters then run them down to compliance to get the office OK.
Wednesday February 3, 2010 8:38 Brian Lucas

Brian Lucas:
I've gotten some questions about players that either haven't signed yet or have signed with other schools. We can't comment on anyone that has not signed a latter yet, whether with our school or another. And since I don't know whether other school's commitments are official, I am only going to talk about our guys that are signed.

What does a phone call from Coach to a player sound like?
Wednesday February 3, 2010 8:41 Den
8:43
Brian Lucas:
It's usually pretty quick. The assistant that has been the primary contact for the player usually walks into coach's office and says, "I've got player X on the phone." Coach usually congratulates him and welcomes him to the Badgers. Asks what he's got going on, maybe a basketball game this week. Sometimes he will talk to a parent or both as well. Most kids are either at school or on their way to school so we have to make it pretty quick.

What exactly does it mean to be a preferred walk-on?
Wednesday February 3, 2010 9:17 Florida Badger
9:19
Brian Lucas:
Got this question a couple times. A preferred walk-on signs an Acceptance of Admission, which is different from a National Letter of Intent. The preferred walk-on will not receive an athletic scholarship but by signing the Acceptance of Admission, we can announce them like a student-athlete that signs an NLI.

Brian Lucas:
I think that's a perfect example of why the coaches put little to no stock in where a player is "ranked." They make determinations based on their own talent evaluations, how they think the player will fit in at UW and on the team and the player's personality/character.

When is Costigan enrolling? He's no longer a grayshirt coming in January 2011?

He will be "full go from the get go" according to Coach Bielema. So they expect him to be part of the 105-man roster for fall camp.

great quote from coach Bielema, "I'd rather be ranked at the end of the season than the beginning of the season." He said it's the same thing when looking at recruiting rankings.

Brian Lucas:
Sherard Cadogan, who was being recruited by a number of schools as a defensive player, called Coach Bielema after the Champs Sports Bowl and said, "Coach, I just saw your tight ends catch 13 passes in the bowl game. I want to come to UW and be a tight end."

Coach B said Cadogan is more in the role of a Garrett Graham type while Manasseh Garner is more along the lines of Lance Kendricks/Travis Beckum

Coach Bielema is going to head downstairs to get a workout in and not much is going on here (except for Coach Chryst eating all the cookies). So I'm going to wrap up the blog and head back to my office. Again, be sure to check out coach Bielema's news conference at 3 p.m. Thanks for reading and contributing all the questions and comments.
