Hi friends and welcome to the last game of the regular season as the Badgers take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in a Big Ten Conference showdown with implications for post season. The Badgers (20-8 overall, 10-7 Big Ten) are alone in third place in the Big Ten standings, half a game ahead of Iowa (16-12, 9-8) and Purdue.

I am your home blogging host, Tam Flarup. I covered the Badgers as the athletics communications contact for over 30 years, and am delighted to bring you all the details of this extra special season. It's senior day today, and it's the final home game for two senior starters, point guard Rae Lin D'Alie and guard Teah Gant. Should be an emotional send off.

I always like to run my photo so you know who you are corresponding with. This is an interactive blog and I welcome your comments and questions. The Badgers control their own destiny as a potential three-seed at the Big Ten Tournament, their first bye in the tourney since 2001. Not playing that first day makes a huge difference in the post season run.
Sunday February 28, 2010 11:37

OSU claimed its sixth consecutive title as the No. 1 seed, and should the Badgers win and Michigan State lose today, UW could tie for second in the conference and have the two-seed on tie breakers. Wisconsin swept MSU home and away this season. UW will finish the conference season no worse than third place.
Sunday February 28, 2010 11:41
11:47
This should be a wild environment today with lots of folks coming out to see the seniors off. Sunday is also Waterford Community Day in honor of Rae Lin D'Alie. The Badgers are also raising money for the Ronald McDonald House on Sunday as American Transmission Company will donate 25 cents for every fan in attendance to the charity. And the university employees who participated in the Partners In Giving campaign this year will also be honored.
Sunday February 28, 2010 11:47

It seems odd we are an hour 10 from the tip and no Badgers are out warming up. Usually Rae Lin and Alyssa and sometimes Tara Steinbauer are out an hour-and-a-half earlier. Just as I say that, here they all come. Must have had a team meeting.

Yes, Alyssa just needs 13 points to become the 20th player in Badger history to score 1,000. That's 20 in over 30 years! Pretty cool.

Wisconsin's last victory was an absolute domination of Penn State, 71-39. It avenged a 54-43 home loss to the Lady Lions earlier in the season and showed the growth the Badgers have had this year. The Badgers are 11-4 (9-4 away and 2-0 neutral) on the road this season, tying the UW season record for most road wins.

UW vs. Iowa is one of five conference games today. Top-ranked OSU is idle. Minnesota at No. 25 Michigan State tips at 1 p.m. CT as does Purdue at Michigan. Illinois at Northwestern is at 2 p.m. and Penn State at Indiana is at 3 p.m. CT. The conference tournament begins Thurs., March 4 at Conseco Arena in Indianapolis. UW will play on Friday in the quarterfinals. The semis are Saturday at 4 p.m. CT and the Championship finals are Sunday at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2. All the other tournament games will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.

The bumble bees have arrived. With Iowa just 3 1/2 hours away, there is always a pretty good contingent of Hawkeyes which travel to this game. The gates just opened 10 minutes ago and you already havie a feeling this place is going to be rockin in 49 minutes!

12:22
Just how noteworthy is this season? UW's 20 wins (so far) is the eighth 20-win season in program history and the second under Coach Stone. The 10 Big Ten wins (so far) are its best Big Ten record under Stone. With a third-place finish in the Big Ten, Wisconsin will equal its second-best conference place ever.

What does this mean for an NCAA bid. There are still some things to play out yet (like today's game and the conference tournament), but Wisconsin has a fairly high RPI of 29. And the Badgers have been picked by three Web sites as an eighth or ninth seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. That would be the first NCAA bid since 2002.

Iowa has a sharpshooter on their team, Jaime Printy, who just set the freshman scoring record at Iowa with 428 points. She is averaging 15.3 points per game. They have another guard with such a great name, Kachine "the Machine" Alexander who averages 15.4 points and leads the conference in rebounding with 11.1 per game. 15 minutes to the anthem.

Thursday I asked Diane if they were going to get caught in the storm. I take it they didn't but it got me thinking what if. If that sort of thing happens, Does the home team provide housing etc. for the visitors or is it find a comfortable looking piece of floor in the airport? Who makes provisions for those things? Madison gets plenty of snow too after all.

Teams make their own travel arrangements and when changes happen, they must accomodate that themselves, too. If anyone really needed assistance, the home team could make recommendations, but the execution is all on the traveling team.
