 Gameday: UW vs. Purdue(01/07/2010)
5:23
Hi Badger fans from snowy Madison. The Kohl Center will be hopping tonight when the visiting Purdue Boilermakers take on the Badger women's basketball team in a Big Ten Conference game starting at 6:30 p.m. CT.

The game will be broadcast live on the BIg Ten Network with former UW women's basketball coach Mary Murphy and Mark Neely. It may also be heard locally on WIBA Radio AM 1310 and on the Badger Radio Network, or for a fee on UWBadgers.com.

Madison has received close to six inches of snow in an all day storm that has the streets slick and squishy. I hope that won't affect our crowd tonight, but the prediction is for single digit temperatures and blowing winds, so I know that may keep people home.

Oh, and there is that other distraction called the national collegiate football championship featuring No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 2 Texas. So that may keep a few souls home, too.

My name is Tam Flarup and I will be your host this evening on the gameday blog. I traveled with the UW team as the athletics communications contact for over 30 years, and now am serving as the home blogger. Feel free to ask me any questions or make comments as the game goes along. The blog is interactive and I will try to answer all your questions. I am including a photo of me so you know who you are chatting with.

I had a nice chat with assistant coach Kathi Bennett before the game. The Badgers played such great defense at Illinois Sunday but lost in the last 2.3 seconds on an Illinois layin on the inbounds. Bennett is the architect of UW's pack defense which has become what UW has hung its hat on this year. UW is on a two-game losing streak having also lost at Iowa on the road. So it will be good to get back in the Kohl Center for some home cooking.

I have already mentioned the last two games by the Badgers. Purdue is coming off an near-upset of No. 3 Notre Dame losing Monday on their home floor, 79-75. Purdue is 2-1 in the Conference with a loss to Northwestern (after 21 straight wins), 60-58, and wins over Minnesota 51-43 and Indiana 76-66.

The series favors Purdue 42-13 and UW has not beaten the Boilermakers since 2001 (13-straight losses). That win was at home under Coach Jane Albright. The 2007 Badger team took the Boilers to overtime in the Big Ten Tournament before losing 82-79. And last year's team lost by a point, 52-51, Jan. 29 in Madison.

UW is 5-1 at home this season, including an upset win over No. 16 Michigan State on Dec. 28, the Badgers first win over a ranked team this year.

In the most recent NCAA statistics released Jan. 4, UW ranks 16th in scoring defense, giving up only 53.1 points per game. The Badgera rank No. 1 in the Big Ten and Purdue ranks No. 2 in the conference in scoring defense allowing 54.9 points per game.

Thursday January 7, 2010 6:03
6:04
The Boilermakers and Wisconsin also rank 10th and 11th in scoring offense with Purdue averaging 61.6 points and UW 60.6 points per game. However, in their last two games, the Badgers are averaging just 51.5 points per game.

We are 25 minutes to the National Anthem and I hope a few more fans find their way to the Kohl Center. It might be campus gridlock that is keeping folks out. This is an earlier game than the usual 7 p.m. tip. And of course the weather is a big factor tonight. But this matchup traditionally draws a huge crowd. Wisconsin's last game at home Dec. 28 against Michigan State drew a season-high 6,765.

A ball just came flying over my position on press row. Had to play defense. It's one reason I always keep my water capped. A colleague had to have her computer monitor replaced from that same errant event. So my hands are up (except when I am typing of course). Just made the blog live on the main UWBadgers.com site so I hope you can join me.

You didn't really get a good look at Mary Murphy from the last photo. Here is one with her partner Mark Neely. I think they do a great job for BTN and have great chemistry and knowledge. Again, the game is being broadcast live on the Big Ten Network in case the snow has kept you away.

We are 10 minutes to the anthem. Here are the starters:
UW Tara Steinbauer and LIn Zastrow at forward; guards Teah Gant, Alyssa Karel and Rae Lin D'Alie at point.

Purdue Jodi Howell, Brittany Rayburn and FahKara Malone at guard; Chelsea Jones and Samantha Woods at forward.

The Badgers just returned to the court following the spirit squad and those flags spelling out Wisconsin. I just love that moment!@
Thursday January 7, 2010 6:26
6:33

Purdue is one of the tallest teams the Badgers have faced this year with three starters 6-0 or better. Jones is 6-4 and Woods is 6-3. They also feature one of the two smallest players in the Big Ten in point guard FahKara Malone who is 5-3. The other shortest player in the Big Ten belongs to the Badgers in 5-3 Rae Lin D'Alie.

Anthem done, it's dark, intros on. A pretty good crowd has shown up. They are making some noise anyway. And we have a band which is good since the students are still on break. Moments to tip.

Tip to UW as Zastrow skies

Thursday January 7, 2010 6:36

Karel pops form the outside and its 4-0 with 18:47
Thursday January 7, 2010 6:37

Badger defense is keeping Purdue outside of the lane. Rayburn had to put one up as time ran out rebound UW. But we miss on the other end.
Thursday January 7, 2010 6:38
6:39

Zastsrow drives and reverses her body for a reverse layup. It's 6-0 with 17:16 left. Howell hits from the corner to stop the drought. Rae Lin hits a 3 pointer and we are back up 9-3 with 16:30 left.

Thursday January 7, 2010 6:39

Turnover no. 3 on Prudue. Karel's quick hands. She averages nearly two steals per game. Purdue hits and its 9-5 Badgers.
Thursday January 7, 2010 6:44
6:45
Lin thinks about it too much and launches a flat 3-pointer. Karel does from the same spot (thanks Lin screen) and its 12-5 UW for the largest lead of the game.

6:46
Lin to Tara for an interior basket. Zastrow is having quite a game.
Thursday January 7, 2010 6:46

Purdue a littel frustrated by this defense and fouls on the rebound. Karel hits another 3 pointer and Purdue calls timeout 17-5 with 13:39 left Karel has 10 of our 17 points.
Thursday January 7, 2010 6:47

Another errant ball....water bottled closed and UW gets it. One of the more intriguing matchups is Alyssa Karel on Brittany Rayburn. The two hot shooters on each team are guarding each other. Teah just blocked a shot atempt into the crowd. Purdue recovered and its 17-7
Thursday January 7, 2010 6:50
6:52

Back to Rayburn v Karel. Rayburn was first off the bench as a freshman and is Purdue's leading scorer this year at 15.4 which ranks 7th in the Big Ten. Karel started since her sophomore season and the junior leads UW with 14.6 points per game which ranks right behind Rayburn at 8th in the Big Ten.

Taylor Wurtz is first in off the bench. Nice article on her today on madison.com if you didn't see it. Rayburn is very quick and we are fouling her. She is also very good at the free throw line 4-4 tonight for 7 poitns. Purdue is the closest since the first minute 21-18

Purdue is on a 9-0 run since our greatest lead of 21-9 with 10:28 left in the half. They have adjusted to our defense and are rubbing people off screens to get open shots. We have to fight through them better. We also have 5 turnovers to their six, and we have dropped to 47 percent shooting from 60 earlier.

Thursday January 7, 2010 7:03 TH

White picked UW over her alma mater. Nice compliment as I know she has seen quite a few teams this year including Purdue a couple of times. Wurtz fires from top of the key just off.

Defense took it away again from the Boilers. Need to find the hole now. Purdue bails us out with a foul Zastrow and Jade Davis in for the Badgers replacing Covington and Wurtz.
Thursday January 7, 2010 7:06
7:07
Steinbauer hits a big 3, her second of the year. She is 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and its 24-18 Badgers.
Thursday January 7, 2010 7:07
7:08
The elbow is Purdue's favorite place to launch a shot from, or maybe that is what we are giving them. But I watched the Purdue v Notre Dame game and they love the elbow. Zastrow will be at the line when we get back from this last media timeout with UW leading 24-20 (3:31)
Thursday January 7, 2010 7:08
7:11

Zastrow makes both and its 26=20. Badgers have never trailed in the first half.

Thursday January 7, 2010 7:11
7:12
ANother errant ball. Badgers have quick hands on defense. Lin blocks a shot out and Purdue ball with 2 seconds left. They miss the long ball but get the rebound and putin for 26-22.
Thursday January 7, 2010 7:12
7:14
Lin tries a good shot in the lane but it rolls out. Badger D is sticking. Rayburn uses her body so well as she draws the foul on a drive. She makes both and is 6-of=6 at the line tonight.
Thursday January 7, 2010 7:14

Purdue trying a little half court delaying press. It works as we had only 7 seconds to shoot. That one misses but Steinbauer grabs the board and scores 28-24

Purdue's run from the 10 minute mark was 22-7. Badgers put them to the line in that time where they were 8-for-8. And Purdue hounded Alyssa Karel who scored 10 points in the first 6:20 on 4-of-4 shooting and finished the half with just 12 points. With Karel not scoring, neither was anyone else as the shooting percentage dropped from 60 percent to 36 percent for the half.

One of those hotly contested contests was on Feb. 18 2007 when UW lost 69-60, but 41 of Purdue's points were scored by a red-hot Katie Geralds who set the Kohl Center individual record that day. UW just couldn't corral her. It was an incredible shooting performance though.
