I am your host, Tam Flarup, the home blogger for the Badgers. This has been an exciting and somewhat unexpected successful season for both teams. The Badgers are 16-5 this season, the best start under Stone and the best start since the 2001-02 season when the team was 16-1. The 6-4 Big Ten start is also the best for the Badgers under Stone and the best since the 2001-02 team started the conference season 7-0. UW was a preseason coaches poll pick for 10th but is currently tied for third.
Sunday January 31, 2010 3:18
3:22
The Wilcats (12-9, 3-7) were picked to finish 8th by the coaches in the preseason poll. They are off to their best start since 1995-96. 6-6 center Amy Jaeschke is a big reason why. She just recorded her 1000th point and became NU's all-time block leader with 224. She leads the conference in blocks with 3.67 per game, and is sixth in scoring averaging 15.9 points per game.
Sunday January 31, 2010 3:22

The Badgers are coming off a win at Indiana last Thursday. It was only the third win at IU in program history and for the first time under Coach Lisa Stone. IU just upset Ohio State today proving any team can win on any given night in the Big Ten. Wisconsin equalled its Big Ten win total of 2008-09 with the win at Indiana. The Badgers were 6-12 last season, tying for seventh.
Sunday January 31, 2010 3:24
3:25
Juniors Tara Steinbauer and Lin Zastrow both recorded double-doubles at Indiana, the first time since the 2007-08 season that UW has had two players tally a double double in the same game. Junior guard Alyssa Karel continues to lead the Badgers in scorling with 13.9 points per game.
Sunday January 31, 2010 3:25
3:26
Over their last seven games, the Badgers have given up 54-or-fewer points per game. Wisconsin is allowing only 49.9 points per game over the stretch. UW leads the Big Ten in scoring defense allowing just 52 points per game. In the most recent NCAA statistics released Jan. 29, Wisconsin remains sixth in scoring defense nationally.
Sunday January 31, 2010 3:26
3:32
Even with their good start this season, the Wildcats are tied for 10th in the league at 3-7 and have lost seven of their last eight games. Northwestern has the slim 29-28 advantage in the long-standing series that dates back to 1977. The team's met once at Northwestern in the regular seaon with the WIldcats winning 49-46. UW bested them in the Big Ten Tournament 60-51.

We are 27 minutes from the national anthem. The Badgers are on the floor warming up. NU was out earlier but has gone back in for their last conference. The doors opened a half hour ago and it looks like it will be a good Sunday crowd despite the later start. UW rankrs third in attendance in the conference averaging 5,074 per game.

yes, not the largest we have had this year, but a good crowd with both ends somewhat filled. The official figure comes just after the half and I will report it then.
Sunday January 31, 2010 4:14
4:15
NU has way too many offensive rebounds on that possession (3) and finally Jaeschke is fouled and at the line. Gant had a great block on one of those attempts. She misses both, UW 6, NU 3
Sunday January 31, 2010 4:15
4:16
D'Alie tries to loosen things up inside by hitting 3-pointer. Her game has really come around this year. Laregest lead of the game UW 8, NU 3
Sunday January 31, 2010 4:16
4:17
Rae waits for her player to blow by her then hits the short corner jumper as time was running out. UW 10, NU 3
Sunday January 31, 2010 4:17
4:18
Lin had a good move past the taller Jaeschke but couldn't finish. Jaeschke picks up her first foul on the NU possession. she is 1-of-3 from the field.
Sunday January 31, 2010 4:18
4:19
Zastrow has another attempt and it gets stuck between the backboard and the rim. Which makes it NU's ball. That doesn't happen too often, but its comical when it does.
Sunday January 31, 2010 4:19
4:20

Ashley Thomas has been in for UW for sometime doing a good job in post defense. Jaeschke just scores over Lin, and then picks up a steal and lays it in to come withing 10-7 with 11 minutes left.

Sunday January 31, 2010 4:29
4:31
Looks like Jaeschke is taking a rest. Maybe Lin can make hay while she is out. She does bottle things up in the lane. We are fortunate to have several posts who play great post defense. We have kept her to just 2-of-4. She needs more attempts for NU to have success.

Sunday January 31, 2010 4:33
4:36
Lin picks up her first foul and Rae Lin picks one up earlier this possession. NU's Hackney converts two free throws. We don't want to put them there very often though. They are second in the Big Ten in free throw shooting with 76 percent. Zastrow scores UW 26, NU 12 with 4:50 left.
Sunday January 31, 2010 4:36

Sunday January 31, 2010 4:38

Rae takes it the lenght of the court. Zastrow had an open lane to the bucket but passes it out to Wurtz who attemps a 3 pointer. NU's wild 3/4 court shot misses wide and its halftime. UW leads 32 - 27.

NU is only the fifth team to score 60 or more points on the Badgers. The normal pack defense where we double posts to stop high percentage shots isn't working because we had to get out on the shooters one-on-one. So they are playing AND hitting very well.

This was a trap game as I see it. They have a great coach who is getting the most out of his team. Is Kathy Bennett there today? She was not at the Penn State game.
