I am your home blog host, Tam Flarup. I covered the Badgers for UW athletic communications for over 30 years, and now direct the UW Athletics Web site. Please feel free to send me your comments and questions during the game. We had some nice interaction last Thursday when many fans stayed home due to weather and watched the Purdue game on the Big Ten Network. Today's game IS being live video streamed at bigtennetwork.com for $2.99.

Michigan is coached by a person familiar to Badger fans. Kevin Borseth is in his third year at MIchigan, but was the former UW-Green Bay coach for over 20 years. Borseth has brought his flex offense and his affinity to 3-pointers to Ann Arbor. Nearly everyone on his teams fires the 3. As a team they are tied for second for most 3-pointers attemped with 286 (making 98 for 34.3 percent).

Sunday January 10, 2010 12:09
12:12
They also feature four starters in double figures led by Veronica HIcks with 13.4, so you have to pay attention to everyone on the floor. The Badgers' pack defense will be busy today keeping people out of the lane and racing out to defend the 3. The Badgers rank first in the Big Ten and 12th in the nation in scoring defense allowing just 53.0 points per game.

UW and Michigan are currently tied for seventh in the conference race with identical 2-3 records. Wisconsin and Michigan were picked by the Big Ten coaches to finish 10th and 11th, respectively, in this pre-season poll. The Wolverines were also picked 11th by the media while the Badgers moved up to seventh in the media pick.

We are about 40 minutes from the national anthem. The Wolverines are on the floor, but the Badgers just went to the locker room for their last coaching chat. I like to let people know what goes on behind the scenes during games. Today I captured assistant coaches Kathi Bennett and Ty Margenthaler in the media room for their traditional soda/tea treat before warmups.

When Wisconsin defeated Purdue Thurdsday, it ended a streak of 13 straight victories by the Boilermakers. In a game between the top-two defensive teams in the Big Ten, UW scored 64 points against Purdue, a team which had been giving up an average of 54.9 points per game.

UW is 6-1 in the Kohl Center this season, including a win over No. 16 Michigan State on Dec. 28, the Badgers first win over a ranked team this year. Wisconsin is 2-0 at home this Big Ten season.

Sunday January 10, 2010 12:32

Wisconsin's leading scorer is 5-7 junior Alyssa Karel who is averaging 15.0 points per game, but has scored 21 or more points six times this season. She had 21 against Purdue and has been said by MSU coach Susie Merchant to be one of the most underrated players in the conference. Coaches really admire her versatility and quick release on her picture-perfect jump shot.
Sunday January 10, 2010 12:36

The Badgers had four players score in double figures against Purdue. Wisconsin is now 8-0 when it has three-or-more players in double digits.

Wisconsin ranks 12th in RPI according to RealTimeRPI.com. UW is also eighth in strength of schedule.

Sunday January 10, 2010 1:01 Marie

The most important thing they have to do is get out on Michigan's 3-point shooters. They are prolific from beyond the arc. Michigan is third (.343) and Wisconsin is fifth in 3-point shooting in the conference (33.8 percent).
Sunday January 10, 2010 1:03

Krista Phillips at the line missing both. UW rebounds. We are playing straight player-to-player defense to start out. They are a dangerous team to try and play zone on with the 3-point shooting.

Lin playing great D on the 6-6 PHillips. Wurtz hits her third 3. Four is her career high. It's raining 3's as UM just hits one. We are tied at 17 with 6:20 left.
Sunday January 10, 2010 1:26
1:28
I said earlier that MIchigan's propensity to shoot 3's was going to tax the Badger's pack defense. That defense is designed to keep people out of the lane. Need to keep fresh troops in for all the running they are doing to close out on shooters.
Sunday January 10, 2010 1:28
1:29
Media timeout and we are tied at 17 with 5:24 left. Both teams shooting low 30 percent from the field. UW owns the rebounding edge 14-11. Wurtz leads UW with 9 points and Reynolds leads UM with 8.

Even though Karel isn't scoring, she is playing some pretty good D. Wurtz is fouled on a 3-point attempt. This is UW's first trip to the free throw line. She makes all 3. UW 31, UM 26 with 16:28 LEFT.

Wurtz has 14 points which ties her career high. Covington is in for Zastrow. Wurtz hits a fourth 3 and she is 4-of-4 tying her career high for most 3s in a game and setting a new career high for points with 17. MIchigan timeout to decide what to do with Taylor.

Phillips with a tough shot over Anya. That's a tough matchup for Covington as she gives up four inches in height to the 6-6 Phillips. Zastrow has had the assignment most of the game. She only gives up two inches. Media timeout 11:48 and UW leads 40-30.
