Badgers (14-4 overall, 4-3 Big Ten)return home to face Illinois (11-5, 3-3), a team it played just two weeks ago. Wisconsin will be looking to avenge a 53-52 loss to the Illini on Jan. 3 in Champaign, Ill. Illlini freshman Karisma Penn made a layin as time was running out to give Illinois the win. The Badgers are coming off a BIG win at No. 20 Michigan State, 48-45. UW swept the Spartans and won in East Lansing for the first time since 2002.

Wisconsin is alone in fourth place in the Big Ten with its 4-3 record ahead of three teams includling Illinois who are tied at fifth with 3-3 marks. Purdue is putting the whomp on Iowa in the first conference game today and will move into a tie with the Badgers at 4-3 before game time. Only Ohio State remains undefeated and ahead of the pack at 6-0.

    The Badgers are 14-4 this season, the best start under Coach Lisa Stone and the best start since the 2001-02 season when the team was 16-1. The 4-3 Big Ten start is also the best for the Badgers under Stone and the best since the 2001-02 team started the conference season 7-0.

UW is 7-1 in the Kohl Center this season, including a win over No. 16 Michigan State on Dec. 28, the Badgers first win over a ranked team this year. Wisconsin is 3-0 at home this Big Ten season. The best home record ever was 12-1 set in 1983-84.

The doors have opened and we expect a great crowd today. Weather is mild, the Packers are out of the playoffs, and UW has a winning basketball team which is really fun to watch. In addition today is Jefferson Community Day in honor of junior Lin Zastrow, where residents of Jefferson, Wis., can purchase $1 general admission tickets. Sunday is also Girl Scout Day as well as Youth Basketball Team Day.

As good as the home record is, the Badgers won their first Big Ten road game this season on Thursday at MSU. Wisconsin was 0-3 on the Big Ten road with losses at Ohio State, Iowa and Illinois. UW has won its last three Big Ten games, the longest conference winning streak since winning five straight from Feb. 14, 2008 through Feb. 28, 2008.

Defense is what the Badgers are hanging their hats on and it was evident at Michigan State as UW held MSU without a field goal for over 12 minutes in the second half. In their last four games, the Badgers have given up less than 53 points per game. Wisconsin is allowing only 49.2 points per game over the stretch. In the most recent NCAA statistics released Jan. 11, Wisconsin moved up to 11th in scoring defense, giving up only 52.7 points per game which is tops in the Big Ten.

The first NCAA RPI of the season came out on Tuesday and the Badgers are ranked 16th. Ohio State is ranked sixth and Michigan State 11th.

In the all-time series Illinois leads 31 wins to 27 and beat the Badgers in Champaign Jan. 3 53-52. The Badgers are 19-9 at home vs. Illinois, and swept the Illini last season home and away.

Freshman Taylor Wurtz is making quite a name for herself as the sixth person in. For the second game in a row, Taylor Wurtz came off the bench to lead all scorers. Wurtz scored a game-high 16 points at Michigan State and tallied a career-high 27 points against Michigan last Sunday. The 6-0 guardfrom Ripon, Wis., is the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Gametracker is set up by CBS interactive and is populated by information on our web site (such as roster and photo info). The stat crew statistics that are entered during the game are then fed to gametracker for all the stats reports. If one person had to do it all, it would take a long time, Fortunately, (and hopefully) all our computers are talking to one another presenting a entertaining way to follow the game.

She certainly has all the right talents as an offensive and defensive player. In the Badgers system the players who play defense get the most Playing time. And you have seen her minutes improve throughout the season. She herself said playing defense is something she has to continue to improve.

The Badgers only have four turnovers in this game and average 16.7 on the season. The Big Ten is becoming a defensive oriented conference. Good D causes TO's. I know they are Lisa Stone's pet peeve and the team works hard on ball handling and passing, but we often get them trying to get the ball into the post.

As the conference seasona progresses, more and more teams are making a concerted effort to deny her even getting the ball let alone shooting it. That's what happens especially when you play teams twice like we have in the last two weeks facing Michigan State and now Illinois. The crowd count will be in after halftime. But I think it's probably a season high. We had our best crowd for the Dec. 28 Michigan State game with 6,765. 5,619 saw the Michigan game Jan. 10. This will easily surpass those two.

The rankings come out on Monday and UW has been receiving votes and beat a top 25 team in Michgian State Thursday. We shall see. UW was ranked briefly in 2007-08 for a week and before that it was 2001-02.

Badger offense has looked pretty good today in spite of the athletic defense being thrown at it. Illinois has some tall and experienced players. They bottled Karel up in the first half pretty well. But Karel is quick and takes what's given her. She is at the line when we return from this Illinois timeout.

This is a very cohesive team. Every coach I have talked to says that. And I think it shows in how they play the pack defense, and know where each other are on offense. Karel misses the first of a one and one. UW 50-38 with 8:20 left.
