Now, about the game. The Badgers (15-4 overall, 5-3 Big Ten) are on quite a roll as they look to make it five in a row as they host second place Penn State (13-4, 5-2) in the first meeting of the season. The Lady Lions are a game ahead of the Badgers in the Big Ten standings. This is the last game of the week for Wisconsin it takes the weekend off from competition with a bye.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:11
6:15
We are just over 44 minutes to the National Anthem. Both teams are on the floor warming up. Penn State is in their road dark blues and the Badgers all red and white. Both teams have received votes in the AP polls. Wisconsin received 37 votes is this week's AP poll, the first team in the receiving votes category.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:15
6:19
We hope for a great crowd tonight with so much on the line. But it is a school night which does affect the families who are able to attend. UW had a season high 8,097 at last Sunday's win over Illinois. UW ranks third in the conference in attendance with 5,115 per game behind Purdue and Michigan State.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:19
6:23
We are 35 minutes from the anthem and intros. As I mentioned this is the first meeting this season between Penn State and Wisconsin. It could be a defensive battle though as PSU and UW rank first and second, respectively, in the Big Ten for field goal defense. Penn State allows opponents to shoot only 34.1 percent from the field while Wisconsin foes shoot just 35.1 percent.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:23
6:27
Both Wisconsin and Penn State are in an unusually high position in the conference rankings chasing unbeaten Ohio State 7-0. UW was picked to finish 10th and Penn State 7th in the coaches preseason poll. Here they are at 2 and 3 in the Big Ten. Both teams are also on four-game win streaks.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:27
6:31
Half hour to anthem. The Badgers returned to their locker room for last minute instructions. Penn State is on the free throw line. If this game comes down to free throws Penn State will have the advantage ranking fifth in the conference shooting 73.4 percent. The Badgers rank eighth in all games at 67.5 percent, but they are last in conference-only games hitting just 61 percent. One person UW can't put to the line is PSU junior Janessa Wolff who is a perfect 17-of-17 in conference games.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:31
6:33
Remember you can write me anytime. The blog is interactive. The Badgers return to the floor as the band cranks up. And it's a good one tonight with LOTS OF BRASS. This is the first week the students were back in school after the holiday break. The campus is much more lively. 25 minutes to anthem.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:33
6:35
I mentioned Janessa Wolff from PSU in my free throw reference earlier. Turns out Wisconsin juniors Alyssa Karel and Tara Steinbauer, both from the Twin Cities, played AAU ball with Janessa. They were all on the same Tartan North team.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:35
6:39
Part of UW's successful win streak has been the emergence of freshman Taylor Wurtz. For the second week in a row, the 6-0 forward was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. After earning the award outright last week, she shares the honor with Penn State's Alex Bentley this week. Wurtz has averaged 18.0 points per game in the last three games including a career high 27 points and 9 rebounds vs. Michigan Jan. 10.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:39
6:41
The Badgers are 15-4 this season, the best start under Coach Lisa Stone and the best start since the 2001-02 season when the team was 16-1. The 5-3 Big Ten start is also the best for the Badgers under Stone and the best since the 2001-02 team started the conference season 7-0. 16 minutes to the anthem and intros.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:41
6:44
UW is 8-1 in the Kohl Center this season, including a win over No. 16 Michigan State on Dec. 28, the Badgers first win over a ranked team this year.
Wisconsin is 4-0 at home this Big Ten season. The Badgers next home game is not until Jan. 31 when it hosts Northwestern in a 4 p.m. game on the Big Ten Network.

Thursday January 21, 2010 6:45 I.M Justafan
6:47
The would be UW-Green Bay's first loss. They were one of only two or three schools in the nation to remain undefeated. Our pre-season loss to them was more palatable as they continued to rise in the polls.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:47

8 minutes to anthem. Badgers just ran off the floor for their last fireup. Penn State still out here warming up. Spirit squad has joined us on the floor and the stands are filling in. Purdue and Michigan State just tipped off on the Big Ten Network. MSU leads 7-5 with 15 minutes left in the first. UW's game is being live video streamed on BigTenNetwork.com for $2.99.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:50
6:58
The starters have been entered in stat crew:
UW Tara Steinbauer and Lin Zastrow at forward, Rae Lin D'Alie, Teah Gant and Alyssa Karel at guard. The usual suspects.

PSU: Tyra Grant and Alex Bentley at guard; Julia Trogele, Meredith Monroe at forward and Nikki Greene at center

Horn is sounding for the anthem and intros.
Thursday January 21, 2010 6:58
7:02
Arena is dark for the intros. The series record heavily favors Penn State with 24 wins and eight losses. UW has won three of the last four however including a 58-52 win at the Kohl Center last year.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:02
7:04
We are about ready to tip. Goes to Penn State off a strong Lin Zastrow tip. PSU turns it over.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:04
7:06
PSU opens in a player to player. UW misses. PSU has a second turnover and its back to the Badgers. Karel fires from the short corner and UW is on the board 2-0 with 18:37 left
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:06
7:07
Long shot misses for PSU and their is a scramble for the rebound. Nice ball movement by PSU and Tragele hits from the corner 202.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:07
7:08
Teah Gant is on PSU's prolific All-American candidate Tyra Grant. I am glad I am not the radio announcer trying to keep those names straight. PSu scores and we are tied at 4.

Hey, I love this blog! It is so cool. I was wondering what is up with Jamie Russell? Is she injured or not playing due to coach's decision. I feel like she disappeared.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:09 Cathy
7:10
Coaches are playing players they feel have the best defense and it's hard to argue with the success they have had. She is not injured. She is splitting time with Jade Davis and Taylor Wurtz, and Wurtz has really come on in the last few games claiming more P time.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:10
7:11
Couple rim outs and some wild passes downcourt and we are tied at 4 at the first media timeout (15:09). Both teams are shooting 2-of-7 for 28 percent. Also tied in rebounds with 5 a piece. Pretty evenly matched so far.

Thursday January 21, 2010 7:21 Sam Estrelia
7:24
If y ou want to follow the game on gametracker click here.

UW is last in the Big Ten in offensive boards with 9.21 per game. Penn State is second with 15.35. Penn State has a front line of 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. UW is often undersized in the post against most opponents.

Steinbauer hits a 3 and UW closes to 13-11 PSU.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:24
7:27
Gant drives by to tie the game at 13. PSU's Bently hits from the elbow to pull ahead 15-13 with 7:39 left at the under 8 media timeout.

I love knowledgeable fans. The scoreboard just flashed that Michigan was leading Ohio State and the crowd erupted with pleasure.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:27
7:28
Tyra Grant, who averages, 19 points a game, has yet to score. Teah has been on her. Badgers miss and PSU gets the rebound but throws it away. PSU 11 boards, UW 10 boards.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:28
7:30
Miss by PSU as both teams race up and down the floor with a one-and-done offense. Wurtz is back in for the Badgers for Rae Lin D'Alie. The smallest person the floor, she had the last two Badger defensive rebounds.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:30
7:32
Karel drives among the trees and misses but makes an athleticdefensive play on the PSU end blocking Grant's sure fast break layup. Gant takes a blow and Jade Davis and Rae Lin are back in. Masterful subbing so far by the Badger staff keeping everyone fresh.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:32
7:34
I don't think I have ever seen so many air balls. PSU makes you play at a faster pace than you want, and it's showing up on the offensive end as we rush our shots. We also have some combinations that are not the usual with all the subbing.

PSU makes its first bucket since 8:08 when Gray hits. PSU leads 18-13 at the last media timeout this half (3:45).
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:34
7:36
Last Badger score was 8:35, four minutes ago. UW shooting 6-25 for 24%. PSU is 7-21 for 33%

7:36
Karel scores on the inbounds to bring UW with 18-15.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:36
7:39
PSU has 6-2 Julia Trogele on our 5-7 Alyssa Karel making it hard for her to get a free look. But Karel is used to a taller defender. Ililnois had 6-1 Lacy Simpson on her and she was able to free herself up the second half for 9 points.

Lin Zastrow at the line. (2:07) misses the first and the second. 18-15 PSU
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:39
7:40
Gray hits a 3 and the crowd is anxious as PSU takes a 21-15 lead with 1:34 left.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:40
7:41
The Badgers have bottled up the lane pretty well but PSU has hit some big shots from the outside. Karel races down for a fast break layup and is fouled. She just threw it up and it went in so she is at the line with an AND one and makes it.

PSU 21, UW 18 (47 seconds)
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:41
7:43
PSU misses and Badgers hold for the last shot. Karel's defender falls down and she drives by shooting a floater that rims out as time expires.

7:49
These are the top two defensive teams in the Big Ten. PSU is first allowing teams to shoot just 34.2 percent. UW is second allowing teams to shoot 35.1 percent. It's definitely a defensive battle.

Starters same as the 1st half (see above).

UW steals PSU;s ball as clock wound down. Gant drives and misses but UW gets rebound. PSU steals it.
Thursday January 21, 2010 7:59
8:00
Rae Lin (5-3) just tried to tip a ball held over the head of Greene (6-4). Very comical. Rae Lin scores her second bucket to bring the Badgers within 21-20 with 18 minutes left.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:00
8:03
Grant stil not finding her range. Feed down low to her was stolen by UW then Grant tied it up. PSU ball. PSU a very athletic team. Gant really shadowing Grant. She's forced to throw up a shot as clock expired and got her own rebound but tied up and UW ball. That entire possession for PSU was over 2 minutes and they came away with nothing.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:03
8:03
Karel makes one of two at the line and we are tietd at 21 with 16:40 left.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:03

Tyra Grant makes her first bucket. She was 0-7 prior to that. 23-21 PSU
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:04
8:07
First media timeout (15:31) PSU 23, UW 21. This could be a nip and tuck game all the way. Largest PSU lead was 21-15 with 1:49 left in the first. UW shooting 25 percent from the field and PSU is at 29 percent. PSU getting the rebounding edge now 29-20
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:07
8:09
PSU's Emily Philips is guarding Rae now. She is listed at 5-4 but she looks shorter than Rae. She just threw it away. Full court press now by PSU.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:09
8:10
Press effective as Wurz trapped on the sideline in front of Coach Lisa Stone. Stone calls timeout. PSU 23, UW 21 with 14:10 left in the game.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:10
8:12
Attendance just reported. 4,708 tonight for the big second place conference tilt. There was another big game tonight as Ohio State escaped Michigan 58-56.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:12
8:12
Thomas from Gant at the buzzer and we are tied for the fifth time.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:12
8:14
Thomas drives on a great penetration dish by Rae and draws the foul. She's at the line shooting two. misses both. Badgers have not led since 4-2 in the first.

Thursday January 21, 2010 8:14

PSU makes a couple quick ones and just like that they are up 27-23. But Gant hits for the Badgers and its 27-25 with 11:49 left.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:15
8:16
Grant on a beautiful runner in the lane. She has perfected that drive. Hard to defend. Time running down on the Badgers but Anya is bailed out by a foul. She will shoot two when we return from this media timeout (10:50).
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:16
8:19
Anya at the line: she makes both. PSU 29, UW 27 (10:50)
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:19

Officials have called a good game letting the teams play. No one is in foul trouble and in this type of game that could erode quickly. Credit the refs.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:20
8:21
Press bothered UW again as they turned it over. Only have 8 though compared to 17 by Penn State.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:21
8:22
Tyra Grant has found her range. and the press is on again. UW breaks ithat time but with only 8 seconds to shoot. Rae dishes to Zastrow underneath and converts. PSU 31-29.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:22
8:23
Wolff scores inside and remains perfect at the line in Big Ten play and its 34-29 PSU with 8:38 left in the game.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:23
8:25
PSU looking more scrappy than UW now. Wonder if UW is tired. These possession by possession games are difficult and waring on the senses. Tara just hit the floor and got up slowly. Under 8 media timeout (7:48) PSU on a 6-0 run to lead 37-29.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:25
8:26
Largest lead of the game for Penn State at 37-29. They led by six in the first half.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:26
8:28
Bently takes the clock down to 2 seconds and scores in the lane over Jade Davis. Bently, who was a co-frosh of the week with UW's Wurtz this week, has an unorthodox release from behind her head which makes her shot tough to block. Zastrow fouls anhd PSU is in the bonus. Wolff makes one of two at the line.
PSU 40, UW 29.
Thursday January 21, 2010 8:28

Thursday January 21, 2010 8:31

Karel on the line. PSU is doing its share of fouling now too. I think both teams are tired. This has been a rapid pace tonight. Karel makes both and its PSU 42-33 with 6 minutes left.
