Welcome to Assembly Hall in Champaign, Ill. The Badgers have had another cold road trip as it was minus 7 here this morning. The team had to venture out early for shootaround at 8:30 a.m. but Pat, our bus driver, had the bus nice and warm for us!
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:32
2:35
UW left Madison about 1:30 p.m. yesterday and arrived here around 5:30 p.m. After a team meal, the Badgers and staff headed out to the movie theatre to watch "Invictus." Most of the players gave it a 'thumbs up' and hopefully, it will provide some inspiration for Wisconsin today.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:35
2:36
The Badgers are looking to pick up their first Big Ten road win today - Wisconsin is 0-2 on the road and 1-2 overall this conference season. Wisconsin is coming off a 61-51 loss at Iowa this past Thursday. The Badgers struggled with poor shooting and turnovers, shooting a season-low 33.9 percent from the field and turning the ball over a season-high 24 times.

For those of you not familar with Assembly Hall, here is a photo of the interior. On the outside it looks like a giant clam shell (at least according to Mike Heller) or a giant spaceship.

Here is a look at each team.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:40
2:41
Wisconsin needs to get its balanced scoring back. At Iowa, the Badgers had only two players in double figures led by Alyssa Karel with 22. The 5-7 guard has scored 20-or-more points in the last three games. Lin Zastrow added 10 points for the UW but she fouled out with a litte more than three minutes to play.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:41
2:42
Karel averages 15.0 points per game while Tara Steinbauer adds 8.1 ppg. Steinbauer is the team's leading rebounder with 6.9 board per game. She pulled down 10 rebounds at Iowa, including six offensive, to record her fifth game of the season with double-figure rebounds.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:42
2:43
Zastrow and Rae Lin D'Alie add 7.6 points per game. D'Alie has seven assists in her last three games to up her season average to a team-leading 2.71 per game.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:43
2:44
Off the bench, freshman Taylor Wurtz chips in 6.2 points per game while sophomore Anya Covington adds 5.2 points per game.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:44
2:44
The Illini have yet to play a Big Ten game away from Assembly Hall. They are 1-1 on the season and 9-3 overall. Today closes out a five-game homestand for Illinois.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:44
2:46
Illinois lost to No. 6 Ohio State before coming back to defeat Penn State last week. The Illini have split their last four games - included in that stretch is a loss to Marquette at home.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:46
2:47
Senior Jenna Smith, a 6-3 center, leads Illinois with 20.9 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. She set the Illini career record with 42 games with a double-double. Smith, a 2008-09 first-team All-Big Ten selection, shoots 53.8 percent from the field and 85.3 percent from the line.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:47
2:48
Freshman Karisma Penn, a 6-2 forward, adds 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Senior Lacey Simpson, a 6-1 forward, does everything for the Illini. She chips in 9.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Simpson leads the team with 4.3 assists and 3.3 steals per game and shoots the most 3 pointers on the team.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:48
2:50
Look for Illinois' freshman class to make some big contributions. The class, which was ranked as high as third nationally, lost two members - Amber Moore (ACL) and Destiny Williams (indefinite leave of absence) but still combines to average 22.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:50
2:50
Illinois leads the all-time series with Wisconsin 30-27 and also has a 17-8 advantage in Champaign. The Badgers won both meetings last season but this is a much improved Illini team, which has some very athletic players.
Sunday January 3, 2010 2:50
2:53
Some keys to the game today for the Badgers are:
1) Turnovers - Wisconsin has turned the ball over an average of 19.8 times per game in the last six games. The Badgers need to take care of the ball better today.
2) Defense - In the last four games, opponents are averaging just 49.8 points per game. On the season, opponents average just 53.1 points per game. Wisconsin needs to continue its pack defense, especially on Smith.

I saw the game against Iowa. Do you think out players were tired from playing so many minutes against MSU specifically D'Alie and Karel?
Sunday January 3, 2010 3:38 Just AJoined
3:39
That may have been a contributing factor since the Badgers didn't play with the usual control that they have. I think they got caught up in how Iowa was playing - something I think we're doing a little here as well.
