Badger women finally home: host SIU-Edwardsville(12/13/2009)
3:30
Hi all and welcome to the Kohl Center where the Badger women's team is happy to be back after a six-game road swing that sent them to both coasts but ended well with a 5-1 record. Today the Badgers host SIU-Edwardsville in one of two final games before they break for the holidays. More on that in a minute.
Sunday December 13, 2009 3:30

The last game was Nov. 24 loss to Green Bay. UW is 8-2 after posting a 56-49 win at Marquette Friday. UW is 2-1 against the state schools this year with a 64-55 win Nov. 19 over UW-Milwaukee.

SIU-Edwardsville is 2-8 overall and plays out of the Ohio Valley Conference. In the only common opponent, the Cougars lost to Milwaukee 85-60.

Some noteworthy items on the day: Coach Lisa Stone is seeking 100th victory today. She is 99-94 (.513) in her seventh season. Other coaches with over 100 wins were Jane Albright (161-107) and Edwina Qualls (131-141).

Sunday December 13, 2009 3:36
3:39
The assistant coaches came into the media room before the game and said they had almost forgotten where the locker room was. They were kidding of course, but the Badgers started their road trip in Oregon where they won that Thanksgiving tournament, then flew to Raleigh, N.C. where they beat NC State in the Big Ten/ACC challenge. And they opened the Big Ten Conference season Dec. 6 at No. 3 Ohio State. They led by eight at the half, but the Buckeyes kicked it into gear in the second half and UW is 0-1 to start the conference season.
Sunday December 13, 2009 3:39
3:42
Lin Zastrow leads the conference in field goal percentage connecting on 34-59 for 57.6 percent. Tara Steinbaur leads the Big Ten in free throw shooting where she is just about perfect on the year hitting 25-27 for 92.6 percent. As a team, the Badgers are allowing the fewest rebounds with opponents averaging 32.0 per game.
Sunday December 13, 2009 3:42
3:52
Sorry, had to take a little break and talk with some long-time fans behind me. We haven't seen each other for awhile with the team out of town. Looks like the usual starters are on the stats with Tara Steinbauer and Lin Zastrow at forward, and gurads Teah Gant, Alyssa Karel and Rae Lin D'Alie at guard.

SIU is staring Melia Duncan, Sydney Stahlberg, Ashley Bey, Madison Meade and Michaela Herrod.
Sunday December 13, 2009 3:52
3:55
SIU has only two players over six feet and one of them is out with an injury. Whitney Champlin is not starting, but will probably see a lot of time as her 6-3 frame will be needed against the taller Badgers. Raven Berry is 6-1 and the Cougar's leading scorer averaging 13.4 points per game but she is not dressed.

I agree between the height advantage and the injury to their leading scorer and the Badgers happiness to be home, we seem to have some advantages.

With the edge in rebounding probably going to the taller Badgers, they could easily get their running game going. We will look for that.

Zastrow opens the scoring underneath for the Badgers, a good sign.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:04
4:05
Steinbauer follows and its 4-0.The person doing the scoreboard had to leave for a minute so i'ts not updating yet.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:05
4:07

SIU is finally on the scoreboard. Rae LIn made two free throws earlier, and not Gant scores so its 8-2. Action is fast.

Sunday December 13, 2009 4:07
4:09
Rae drives the lane and stops and pops its 10-4. Karel steals the ball on the other end and heads coast to coast. 12-4
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:09
4:09
Karel in the passing lane again and she sprints for the basket but hears the footsteps and misses but little Rae follows with a tipin. its 14-4. time out SIU
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:09
4:11
Rae fouls and SIU will have the ball when we return from this media timeout. Badgers having their way with the Cougars hitting 6-9 for 67 percent from the field and outrebounding the smaller squad 5-3. Rae Lin leads with six points.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:11
4:15
Taylor Wurtz, the hot freshman from Brandon, Wis., just made her first appearance in the game. Alyssa Karel on the breakaway and its 16-4.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:15
4:16
Karel and Zastrow take a rest and Jade Davis and Anya Covington enter. Wurtz just hit a 3-pointer almost on cue with my comment above and its 19-4.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:16
4:17
It's one and done for the Cougars with Wisconsin getting the board every time. Jade Davis eludes a defender and hits baseline 21-4.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:17
4:18
First basket for the Cougars since 17:29 some seven minutes ago. UW hitting 56 percent to SIU's 23 percent and the advantage on the boards continues 12-5. UW also has only one turnover so far.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:18
4:20
I think we are going to see a lot of contributions from a lot of people today. The Cougars are having a tough go with our defense and against the taller UW team. Jamie Russel makes her first appearance and Emily Neal is waiting at the scorer's table to sub for Tara Steinbauer who is shooting free throws. She makes them both 23-6.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:20
4:21
Tara has only missed two free throws all year and leads the Big Ten with 96 percent entering tonights game where she is still perfect.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:21
4:22
SIU has a breakaway and Davis fouls. Bey misses but SIU gets the rebound but gives it away to Russel.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:22
4:23
Anya Covington hits baseline. She is having a good sophomore season hitting 52.5 percent from the field and averaging 5.0 points per game.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:23
4:23
Jade hits a 3-pointer and its 28-10.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:23
4:24
SIU is in a zone defense challenging our long game. Russel misses and we go the other way.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:24
4:25

Badgers work the ball well. Lisa Stone yells reverse it and Wurtz gets a good look.

Sunday December 13, 2009 4:25
4:27
Badgers still scoring at a 60 percent clip to 27 percent for SIU-E. The most points UW has scored in a half this year is 38. Looks like that mark may fall. Most points in a half record wise is 62.

Sunday December 13, 2009 4:29

Karel makes some fancy dribble drive moves and is fouled. She shoots two and makes both so its 32-10.
Sunday December 13, 2009 4:30

Turnover Badgers so SIU has 2.6 seconds but misses the 3/4 court shot and its 45-18 at the half.

UW stats: 18-28 FG for 64.3 percent; 3-7 3pt for 42.9 percent; 20 rebs, 9 assts, 7 TOs

Scheduling at Wisconsin is a difficult task with four teams using the same building. You want to sprinkle in some sure wins, and UW has played some tough non-conference opponents like Oregon and NC State and Green Bay and Marquette. SIU also does not have their leading scorer who is injured, so I am sure they are a better team than this showing.

Most of this half has been played be UW's reserves so the smooth-operating offense has lacked a bit at times. UW also has had more turnovers this second half. Shooting has dropped below 60 percent to 43 percent so all of this has slowed the scoring.

Sunday December 13, 2009 5:32

Taylor Wurtz has a career-high seven rebounds to go along with her 8 points. Tara Steinbauer had her third double double of the year and fifth of her career with 10 points and 10 boards. Emily Neal finally scores at the line hitting one of two.
