Happy New Year's Eve from Iowa City, Iowa! Hopefully, it's not as cold where you are as it was here today. The temps didn't get much above 10 degrees here today but luckily for the Badgers, we spent most of the day inside.

The Badgers arrived in Iowa yesterday afternoon around 5:30 p.m. The bus trip was made quicker with a couple of movies. The team voted to watch the Hannah Montana movie first so the coaches got to watch Collateral the second half of the trip. I was surprised that Coach Oties knows all of the songs to Hannah Montana (he has three daughters!) while Coach Ty didn't know any (he has two sons!).

The team spent a relaxing evening at the hotel. Without having to study, the team gets a chance to enjoy some free time to read, watch movies or hang out with the teammates. In fact, Teah has a lovely manicure courtesy of Jade.

After breakfast this morning, the Badgers headed to Carver-Hawkeye Arena for shootaround.

The arena is a large bowl and you have enter from the top of the bowl. The Hawkeyes football stadium is similar in the fact that its built into the hills in this area.

During shootaround, the Badgers like to get familar with the rims here. They will do several shooting drills as well as working on opponents' in-bounds plays. The practice usually wraps up with shooting free throws - something the Badgers' need to improve upon after the Michigan State game.

One of the highlights of the pregame practice is a 3-point shooting contest between the coaches and players. The players (Jade, Alyssa, Rae and Taylor) won for the first time this season today. They were pretty fired up about that.

Wisconsin is tied for third in the Big Ten at 1-1 and is 11-2 overall. Following Monday night's win over No. 16 Michigan State, the Badgers are receiving votes in this week's ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll. Led by junior Alyssa Karel, who averages 14.5 points per game, the UW has a balanced scoring attack. Junior Tara Steinbauer adds 8.3 points and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds per game. Rae Lin D'Alie, who is coming off one of her best games as a Badgers vs. the Spartans, adds 7.9 points per game.

UW has won most of its games this season with its defense. Wisconsin is allowing just 52.5 points per game while averaging 62.0 points per game. In their last three games, the Badgers have held their opponents to less than 20 points in the first half.

On the other side of the court, Iowa has been decimated by injuries and other problems this season. The Hawkeyes have only eight players suited up today but four of those players average in double figures. Sophomore guard Kamille Wahlin leads the team with 16.7 points per game and takes the most 3-pointers for Iowa. Junior Kachine Alexander averages a double-double with 15.2 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.

It's hard to tell from where I'm sitting since I'm about 40 feet off the court. Wisconsin has been in foul trouble in some other games earlier this season but had improved that area in more recent games. The coaches talk a lot about making sure the players show their hands so they don't get called for the checks.
